The Madison County, Virginia, Flash Flood of 27 June 1995

Abstract: Between 25 and 27 June 1995, excessive rainfall and associated flash flooding across portions of western Virginia resulted in three fatalities and millions of dollars in damage. Although many convective storms occurred over this region during this period, two particular mesoscale convective systems that occurred on 27 June were primarily responsible for the severe event. The first system (the Piedmont storm) developed over Madison County, Virginia (eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains), and propagated sl… Show more

“…Furthermore, the processes associated with EPEs in the SEUS are often influenced by the unique physical geography of the region. Examples of such processes include water vapor transport from surrounding ocean basins (e.g., Knippertz and Wernli 2010;Moore et al 2012;Pfahl et al 2014), orographic forcing along the Appalachian Mountains (e.g., Pontrelli et al 1999), and lifting along topographically induced baroclinic zones (e.g., Koch and Ray 1997;Atallah and Bosart 2003;Srock and Bosart 2009).…”

“…The occurrence of such cases (which often produce flash flooding) around the world is well documented in the literature (Schroeder 1977;Caracena et al 1979;Sénési et al 1996;Pontrelli et al 1999;Romero et al 2000). Although the common ingredient for these cases is the low-level flow of a conditional unstable air mass toward orography, it is not generally sufficient since, as noted above, one can envision scenarios in which deep convective cells do not concentrate their precipitation in the same location.…”

“…Orographic mechanisms in the eastern United States associated with heavy rainfall from tropical cyclones, winter-spring extratropical systems, and warm-season thunderstorms are diverse and in many settings poorly understood (e.g., Barros and Kuligowski 1998;Nykanen 2008;Smith et al 1996;Pontrelli et al 1999).…”
