The lower prevalence of female genital mutilation in the Netherlands: a nationwide study in Dutch midwifery practices

Abstract: On the basis of this study, we can conclude that FGM is a serious clinical problem in Europe for migrant women from risk countries for FGM. These women should receive extra attention from obstetricians and midwives during childbirth, since almost half are mutilated and FGM involves a risk of complications during delivery for both women and children.

“…Of the 10 papers included in the review, there were four that employed qualitative methods (Berggren et al, 2004;Isman et al, 2013;Lazar et al, 2013;Leval et al, 2004), five used a quantitative survey design (Jacoby & Smith, 2013;Korfker et al, 2012;Tamaddon et al, 2006;Widmark et al, 2002;Zaidi et al, 2007) and one used a survey design that also collected qualitative data. Eight papers were from HIC and two provided data about midwives in LMIC (Berggren, et al, 2004;Isman, et al, 2013).…”

“…Thus far the proportion of women with FGM/C has been based on three main methods of evaluation: a) applying the prevalence found in the country of origin; b) experts' knowledge or hypotheses (Gallard 1995;Andro and Lesclingand 2007;Johnsdotter et al 2009); and c) reporting by medical professionals (Korfker et al 2012;Equality Now et al 2012;Hänselmann et al 2011;Bund der Frauenärzte et al 2005;Jager et al 2002;Herschderfer and Buitendijk 2012). Among the main nationalities from FGM/C-practicing countries around 70,000 women aged 16 and over and 5,500 girls under 16 may be mutilated or at risk.…”
