The Low Level of Response to Alcohol-Based Heavy Drinking Prevention Program: One-Year Follow-Up

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Objective: Heavy drinking is common on college campuses, with a marked increase from high school to freshman year. Programs addressing heavy campus drinking often personalize prevention protocols to fi t a student's demography and prior drinking characteristics. Few efforts have individualized approaches to address a person's vulnerability through his or her low level of response (low LR) to alcohol. Method: This article describes the recently completed 55-week outcome in drinking quantities and prob… Show more

“…Their predictive validities regarding future heavy drinking and alcohol problems across different populations and sexes in studies conducted in the United States, United Kingdom, and Switzerland are also consistent . These studies cumulatively indicate that an individual's LR, as measured by the SRE, could serve as an additional risk marker for the development of problem drinking, and can be a useful tool in efforts to personalize prevention and treatment …”

“…As additional samples with SRE data, specifically SRE‐T, become available, individual loci and polygenic risk scores from such GWAS might explain even greater variance in LR. It will set the stage for future interventions that might aim to interrupt progression to AD . This boost in power necessitates further collection of SRE data.…”

“…61,62,83 Each of these pathways has been shown to benefit from tailored personalized intervention. [83][84][85] Schuckit et al 83 These examples are specific to alcohol, but the idea of heterogeneous genetically influenced pathways is likely to be broadly applicable to psychiatric/substance use disorders. Heterogeneity in symptoms, course and etiology of disorders is recognized as a profound challenge in studying psychopathology.…”

“…Lower initial sensitivity to alcohol is a risk factor for higher alcohol consumption and subsequent problems. Improved understanding of factors that impact one's alcohol sensitivity may therefore be useful in understanding trajectories from early to problematic alcohol use, and can be used as a focus for prevention programs (Schuckit et al., ).…”
