The love-hate relationship between chlorophyll a and water in PSII affects fluorescence products

Abstract: We thank Rachel Shrode, Ethan Darling, Keegan Ferris, and Hunter Peterson for their invaluable help in plant care and data collection. We are also grateful to the University of Wyoming Williams Conservatory for access to their facilities. This research was supported by NSF grant #IOS-1547796. Abbreviations: Chl a -chlorophyll a molecule; Chl b -chlorophyll b molecule; ChlF -chlorophyll a fluorescence; Fm' -maximal fluorescence yield of the light-acclimated state; Fs -steady-state fluorescence yield; PPFD -phot… Show more

“…All the presented results indicate that water deficiency affects both the donor and acceptor sides of PSII, as well as the pool of reaction centres ( Guadagno et al., 2021 ). In consequence, the performance indices PI ABS and PI total , as integrative parameters, serve as good indicators of water deficit, as was shown by Guha et al.…”

“…Interestingly, under droughtstressed conditions, we found that AA-applicated female willows displayed a higher Chl a content than males. Chl a constitutes nearly 75% of the chlorophyll complex chromophores, which is closely associated with the light capture efficiency in the light reaction (Guadagno et al, 2021;Li et al, 2020). Thus, it is suggested that the higher Chl a by AA can improve light capture and photosynthetic capacity better in females than in males.…”

“…Fluorescence is a proxy for leaf cellular damage, directly associated with failure to recover from drought upon watering, defining the time of death at the tissue level across different species and environments (Guadagno et al, 2017; Pérez‐Bueno et al, 2019; Singh et al, 2022). Derived parameters from leaf‐level ChlF measurements under actinic light conditions rapid changes in response to a variety of stress conditions and across a large range of species (Guadagno et al, 2021, 2018; Porcar‐Castell et al, 2012). The response of the ChlF signal to the environment accommodates changes occurring in the reaction centre and at the level of the light harvesting complexes, which systematically adjust to cope with changes in the energy budget—incoming versus utilized excitation energy—in each PSII (Baker, 2008; Baker & Rosenqvist, 2004).…”
