The longhorn beetles (Coleoptera, Cerambycidae) of Ukraine: Results of two centuries of research

Abstract: The study of the longhorn beetles fauna in Ukraine has been going on for two centuries. During this time, huge collections of materials have been accumulated. These enabled a comprehensive view of the fauna of the longhorn beetles in Ukraine to be formed. However, despite this, the first complete list of the longhorn beetles of the fauna of Ukraine was compiled by Zahajkevych only in the late twentieth century. He listed 275 species. Decades later, Bartenev supplemented Zahajkevych’s list with five more specie… Show more

“…Conservation of a particular endangered insect species must be based on accurate knowledge of abundance Diversity 2022, 14, 1128 2 of 10 and distribution, the causes and extent of decline, the identification of threats and monitoring programmes to assess conservation status [9][10][11][12]. Unfortunately, for many insects of conservation concern, distribution data are often lacking due to poor knowledge of their ecology and little study of range boundaries and particular macro-regions [2,[13][14][15][16][17]. Moreover, long-term fluctuations in insect abundance are complex and multifaceted, which indicates the need for multi-year studies of the same macroregions.…”

“…The Coleoptera order of beetles is one of the most diverse insect orders in the world, which dominates many ecosystems in terms of individual abundance and occupied niches [1]. Despite the important ecosystem role, the beetle fauna in some regions have not been studied enough; therefore, to understand the changes taking place on a global scale, it is important to know the local and regional fauna varieties, especially for protected areas, such as nature reserves and national parks [2][3][4][5][6].…”

“…Some beetle families are used as indicators of the state of ecosystems or to determine the species richness of different regions ( Huffaker and Gutierrez 1999 , Ruchin et al 2019a , Avtaeva et al 2021 , Sundukov and Makarov 2021 ). For example, Cerambycidae , Curculionidae and Elateridae have been identified as "useful surrogates" for Coleoptera diversity in forest ecosystems ( Ohsawa 2010 , Zamoroka 2022 ).…”
