The long non-coding RNA, urothelial carcinoma associated 1, promotes cell growth, invasion, migration, and chemo-resistance in glioma through Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway

Abstract: The long non-coding RNA, urothelial carcinoma associated 1 (UCA1) has been demonstrated to play important roles in various types of cancers. This study investigated the functional role of UCA1 in glioma and explored the underlying molecular mechanisms. UCA1 was found to be highly up-regulated in glioma cells, and knock-down of UCA1 inhibited cell growth, invasion and migration, and also induced apoptosis in glioma cells. On the other hand, overexpression of UCA1 promoted cell proliferation, cell invasion and m… Show more

“…13 UCA1 plays an oncogenic role in multiple malignancies. [14][15][16][17] Our preliminary studies also showed that knockdown of UCA1 had an inhibitory effect on AML cell proliferation in vitro and tumourigenesis in vivo. LncRNAs also function as crucial regulators of autophagy.…”

“…The ceRNA is an important mechanism of lncRNA‐regulated gene function. UCA1 has been identified as an oncogenic lncRNA in diverse malignancies . One important mechanism responsible for the oncogenic functions of UCA1 is its capacity to sponge certain miRNAs by acting as a ceRNA .…”

“…When mir-489 was used to treat doxorubicin-, tamoxifen-, or cisplatin-resistant cell lines, it showed significant inhibition of cell proliferation [196]. It was found that mir-489 could directly target ULK1 and LAPTM4B genes, negatively regulate the expression of ULK1 and LAPTM4B, hinder the fusion of autophagosomes and lysosomes, inhibit autophagy, and thus overcome tumors' drug resistance [197][198][199].…”

“…Several studies have demonstrated that UCA1 promotes cell proliferation and EMT in osteosarcoma (38), glioma (81) and papillary thyroid carcinoma (82) by activating the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. In addition, the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway is closely associated with chemoresistance (12,81,83). UCA1 induces chemoresistance to cisplatin and temozolomide in glioma and decreases the sensitivity of BC cells to tamoxifen via the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway (81,83).…”
