The Lipocytes in Normal Human Liver

Abstract: A quantitative analysis of lipocytes (fat-storing cells, Ito cells) has been conducted on needle liver biopsies of 8 subjects without hepatic impairment. The mean volume density of lipocytes was 1.88 ± 0.25% of parenchymal volume, and the number of lipocytes per 1,000 hepatocytes (Ito cell index) was 63.45 ± 19.18. A study of the zonal distribution showed that the values were significantly higher in the centrolobular than in the periportal areas. No correlation was evident between the volume density or the num… Show more

“…Some authors have noted a greater number in pericentral than in periportal or intralobular regions [Giampieri et al, 1981;Jezequel et al, 19841, while others have described a more uniform distribution [Sztark et al, 1986;Geerts et al, 19901. In human liver, lipocytes are present in a ratio of 3.6 to 6 cells per 100 hepatocytes [Bronfenmajer et al, 1966;Giampieri et al, 1981;Jezequel et al, 19841. They are located in the perisinusoidal space (subendothelial space of Disse).…”
