The levels of adiponectin and leptin and their relation to other markers of cardiovascular risk in patients with psoriasis

Abstract: The data suggest that in addition to the strong effect of inflammation and LDL oxidation, adipokine level may be one of the mechanisms behind the close association between psoriasis and CVD. Given the significant relations of several markers with BMI, health consequences of excessive weight should be better communicated to patients with psoriasis.

“…Multivariate analysis revealed that obesity was an independent risk factor of hyper-leptinemia. This was in agreement with the study of Chen et al [31], Wang et al [51], Aktan et al [32], Johnston et al [33] and Al-Maskari et al [53].…”

“…Another study found a positive correlation between plasma concentration of IL-6 and the oxidized LDL-b2-glycoprotein complexes (oxLDL-b2-GPI) in patients with psoriasis [119]. Furthermore, a concentration of oxidized LDL and oxidized LDL-b2-glycoprotein complexes showed a positive correlation with BMI.…”

“…A number of experimental studies suggest that adiponectin attenuates excessive inflammatory responses in a variety of tissues, especially in obesity-associated states [24][25][26] . Roles of adiponectin in the development of psoriasis, one of the obesitylinked diseases as mentioned above, have been also discussed in the vast past epidemiologic reports [27][28][29] . Serum adiponectin levels are decreased in psoriasis patients compared with healthy controls and its levels increase along with the improvement of dermatitis after successful treatments, including anti-tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-a agents, suggesting that adiponectin negatively regulates psoriasis progression 30,31 .…”
