The Letter Contrast Sensitivity Test: Clinical Evaluation of a New Design

Abstract: The results indicate the Mars test has test-retest reliability equal to or better than the Pelli-Robson test and comparable responsiveness. The strong correlation between the tests provides evidence the Mars test is valid. However, systematic differences indicate normative values are likely to be different for each test. The Mars Letter CS Test is a useful and practical alternative to the Pelli-Robson CS Chart.

“…Studies probing the mechanisms of contrast sensitivity require electronic instrumentation, as in Hayes and Merigan (2007), but portable charts based on contrast can be used as a guide to possible deficits that could be subjected to further analysis (Figure 4). The Pelli-Robson and Mars tests use a single large letter size with contrast varying across groups of letters (Haymes et al, 2006). The Pelli-Robson chart uses letters (6 per line), arranged in groups whose contrast varies from high to low.…”

“…Detecting contrast is an essential feature of vision that can provide information about a patient's visual function that is independent of visual acuity (Haymes et al, 2006). Consequently, CS acts as a valuable supplement to traditional visual acuity assessments in both clinical settings and in human engineering applications (Scialfa, Adams, & Giovanetto, 1991).…”

“…The incentive for using CS testing in normal vision patients is that contrast detection affects everyday living and bodily health (Haymes et al, 2006). Previous research has shown that good contrast detection facilitates numerous common activities such as driving, reading, walking, performing computer tasks, and recognizing faces (Haymes et al, 2006).…”
