The LDL/HDL ratio and atherosclerosis in ankylosing spondylitis

Abstract: Elevated CIMT, IMA and TOS levels suggest an increased risk of atherosclerotic heart disease in AS patients. The LDL/HDL ratio was higher in AS patients compared to controls, and there was a correlation between LDL/HDL ratio and CIMT, albeit statistically weak. Therefore, the LDL/HDL ratio is not a reliable marker to predict atherosclerotic heart disease in AS patients.

“…However, in the study [ 45 ] in AS patients, the authors did not observe a significant difference in T-Chol, LDL-Chol, HDL-Chol, and TG concentration compared to healthy subjects. But in AS patients, the values of HDL/LDL ratio, complex intima-media, and TOS concentration as well as inflammatory state parameters were significantly higher than in controls.…”

“…The information of salient demographic characteristics and clinical information of the pooled study population are shown in Table 1 . This meta-analysis includes 24 articles, in which 11 were conducted in Turkey 15, 17, 23, 26–29, 33, 35, 38, 40) , 3 in Italy 24, 25, 39) , 2 in India 14, 32) , and 1 each in Korea 16) , France 18) , Greece 19) , Tunisia 30) , Hungary 31) , the Netherlands 34) , Spain 36) and Poland 37) . In patients, the mean age ranged from 29.4 to 52.6 years, and the percent of male gender and B27 positivity ranged from 53% (M/F: 29/54) to 100% and 48% to 100%, respectively.…”

“…Moreover, 50% of the studies reported the examination of IMT performed under patients were in blind condition. Based on the criteria of NOS, we found that 11 studies 15, 19, 23, 26, 29, 3032, 35, 40) might be exposed to potential selection bias, thus the score of the above articles were 6 or 7 points. Thirteen studies scored 8 points, 8 studies scored 7 points, and only 1 study scored 6 points.…”

“…It is therefore consistent with our hypothesis that those disease states are associated with positive ACB assays. Further conditions with positive ACB readings include diabetes [114] , hypothyroidism [115] , intrauterine growth restriction [116] , chronic inflammation (rheumatoid arthritis [117] and ankylosing spondylitis [118] ), infection (sepsis [119] and malaria [89] ), exercise [96] and trauma [97] . All of these are also associated with high FFA concentrations (see Table 2 ) through various physiological and pathophysiological pathways [120] , [121] , [122] , [123] , [124] , [125] .…”
