The lack of association between hypertension and hypothyroidism in a primary care setting

Abstract: This work examines the association between hypertension and hypothyroidism in geriatric patients seen at a primary care medical office. One hundred and twentytwo geriatric patients with elevated thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels were selected for the study. An equal number of euthyroid geriatric individuals were selected from the same clinic for comparison. We found no differences in mean diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in the euthyroid and hypothyroid groups (80.1 mm Hg vs 78.9 mm Hg, P = 0.25). Additio… Show more

“…Although hypertension was correlated with diabetes mellitus and use of NSAIDs, no association was observed between hypertension and either untreated or treated hypothyroidism. 199 A study of patients referred to an academic geriatrics clinic identified elevated TSH levels in 122 patients; compared with age-matched controls, the hypothyroid patients showed no significant difference in SBP or DBP, and linear regression analysis of TSH and DBP showed no association. 200 Although lower levels of T4/T3 or higher TSH levels seem to be associated with a rise in DBP, this effect may be blunted in the oldest old.…”

“…In a study of postmenopausal women Ն50 years of age, 45.4% had hypertension, and 10.9% had hypothyroidism. Although hypertension was correlated with diabetes mellitus and use of NSAIDs, no association was observed between hypertension and either untreated or treated hypothyroidism (199). “…Thyroid hormone is known to increase cardiac output and decrease systemic vascular resistance [1]. Some studies have indicated a high prevalence of systolic and diastolic hypertension in hypothyroidism [2][3][4][5][6][7][8], while others reported no association of diastolic hypertension with hypothyroidism in geriatric patients in a primary care setting [9].…”
