The Italian National Seismic Network and the earthquake and tsunami monitoring and surveillance systems

Abstract: Abstract. The Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) is an Italian research institution, with focus on Earth Sciences. INGV runs the Italian National Seismic Network (Rete Sismica Nazionale, RSN) and other networks at national scale for monitoring earthquakes and tsunami as a part of the National Civil Protection System coordinated by the Italian Department of Civil Protection (Dipartimento di Protezione Civile, DPC). RSN is composed of about 400 stations, mainly broadband, installed in the Cou… Show more

“…All stations but Z3.A316A (Montecristo) have been turned real-time using UMTS and are currently contributing to the Seismic National Network monitoring system and to the bulletin (Michelini et al, 2016). The real-time acquisition rates are order of 99 % in best sites and a few sites experiencing transmission problems due to insufficient UMTS signal or service quality will be optimized soon after the summer.…”

“…The two largest shocks of magnitude M W 5.5 and 5.4, were well recorded by 11 and 14 strong-motion stations in the near-source, respectively, belonging to the RAN (Rete Accelerometrica Nazionale, http://ran.protezionecivile.it/IT/index.php) and to the INGV [48,49] accelerometric networks ( Figure 3f). The accelerograms were processed to remove the instrument response, band-pass filtered between 0.02-0.5 Hz, and time integrated to obtain ground velocity histories.…”

“…We inverted the strong motion recordings of 36 three‐component, digital accelerometers belonging to the National Accelerometric Network (Rete Accelerometrica Nazionale, http://ran.protezionecivile.it/IT/index.php) of the Italian Department of Civil Protection, and to the National Seismic Network (Rete Sismica Nazionale) of INGV (Michelini et al, ; Moretti et al, ). These stations were all located within 45 km from the epicenter (Figure ).…”
