From Tabernaemontana chippii root bark, forty-five alkaloids were isolated; thirty-four were fully characterized by means of their spectral data and/or co-tlc; eight alkaloids were new, four of them being 3-hydroxy derivatives of known dimeric voacamine type alkaloids. Most of the twenty-six known alkaloids belonged to the corynanthean, ibogan, or bisindole classes. The structures of eleven other alkaloids--all minor--were only partially elucidated, most of them being new alkaloids. All the dimeric alkaloids were shown to possess strong antimicrobial activity against gram-positive bacteria and moderate to weak activity against gram-negative bacteria.

Summary. From the root bark of the apocynacea Hedranthera barteri (Hook: f.) Pichon were isolated the known indole alkaloids vobtusine (I), voacamine (2), callichiline (3), voacanghe (4) and conoflorine (5). as well as the unknown plant bases amataine, goziline and owerreine, and also beninine and 1,2-dehydrobeninine. The structures of the two last mentioned alkaloids were shown in an earlier publication to be 6 and 7, respectively. Amataine, goziline and owerreine are bis-indole alkaloids, which on the basis of their chemical and spectroscopic (especially mass spectroscopic) properties have been assigned the structures 8, 9 and 10, respectively.Aus der Wurzelrinde der Apocynacee Hedranthera barteri (Hook. f.)In der vorliegenden Arbeit berichten wir uber die Isolierung von sechs weiteren Basen. From the leaves of the West African plant (Apocynaceae Hedranthera barteri) has been isolated the phenolic (-)-desmethyl-vobtusine (3), alongside the already known bisindolc alkaloids ( -)-goziline (1) and (-)-vobtusinc (2). The new allraloid 3 has bcen spectroscopically charactcrised and correlated with ( -)-vobtusine (2). Furthermore, the 'monomeric' alkaloids (-)-herlrantherine (4) and ( -)-17-hydroxy-hedrantherine ( 5 ) wcre found in the leaves of H . barteri. Both of these alkaloids contain a cyclic semiacetal group. These bases and their derivatives possessing an unchanged @-anilinoacrylester group show, in the mass spectrometer, the same characteristic fragmentation as vincadifformine ( l l ) , whilst their 2.3-dihydroderivatives bear more of a resemblance to aspidospcrminc. From thc strongly negative Cotton effect of 4 and 22 a t 300-350 nm follows the absolute configuration in these bases o f centre 12.Hedrantherinc (4) represents the lower half of the bisindole type of vobtusine bases. The upper half has previously been encountered in form of the alkaloid beninine in the rootbark of H . barteri.Von der westafrikanischen Apocynaceae Hedranthera barteri (Hook. f.) Pichon ist bisher nur die Wurzelrinde hinsichtlich ihres Alkaloidgehaltes eingehend untersucht worden. Die folgenden Indolalkaloide wurden bisher isoliert und charakterisiert :
