The 11 April 2012 M 8.6 Indian Ocean earthquake was an unusually large intraoceanic strike-slip event. For several days, the global M ≥ 4:5 and M ≥ 6:5 seismicity rate at remote distances (i.e., thousands of kilometers from the mainshock) was elevated. The strike-slip mainshock appears through its Love waves to have triggered a global burst of strike-slip aftershocks over several days. But the M ≥ 6:5 rate subsequently dropped to zero for the succeeding 95 days, although the M ≤ 6:0 global rate was close to background during this period. Such an extended period without an M ≥ 6:5 event has happened rarely over the past century, and never after a large mainshock. Quiescent periods following previous large (M ≥ 8) mainshocks over the past century are either much shorter or begin so long after a given mainshock that no physical interpretation is warranted. The 2012 mainshock is unique in terms of both the short-lived global increase and subsequent long quiescent period. We believe that the two components are linked and interpret this pattern as the product of dynamic stressing of a global system of faults. Transient dynamic stresses can encourage shortterm triggering, but, paradoxically, it can also inhibit rupture temporarily until background tectonic loading restores the system to its premainshock stress levels.

While the ISC-GEM catalog describes earthquakes only since the beginning of the twentieth century, it has properties that are both rare and desirable: its locations were estimated using the same method and velocity model, its magnitudes are on the same scale, and it reports location and magnitude errors.…”

Is Europe-wide operational earthquake forecasting (OEF) possible? We discuss the myriad problems that prevent it today, many of which relate to heterogeneities in earthquake recording, processing, and reporting. We contemplate the difficulty of building models that cross political boundaries, and we consider the prospect of European OEF in light of recent efforts to harmonize long-term seismic hazard assessment among several nations. Emphasizing the Strategies and Tools for Real-time Earthquake Risk Reduction (REAKT) project, we report achievements related to short-term seismicity forecasting in Iceland and Italy that could apply elsewhere in Europe. In Iceland, collaboration fostered by REAKT resulted in a revised earthquake catalog and a prototype OEF system. We report results from an experiment conducted with this prototype; these results suggest ensemble models provide an information gain, updating models more frequently improves their forecast skill, and that OEF is computationally feasible. In Italy, REAKT supported the creation of an ensemble model that now issues weekly hazard forecasts. We present examples of these forecasts, highlighting the problem that OEF often yields low probabilities, which are difficult to interpret and convert into actionable decisions. Motivated by such low hazard probabilities, we highlight Europe's pioneering efforts in operational earthquake loss forecasting and mention solutions to problems that currently prevent OEF at the European scale.

ResumenEl terremoto ocurrido el 12 de julio de 1785 en Colombia ha sido uno de los eventos sísmicos con mayor número de estudios macrosísmicos realizados a partir de documentos históricos. En la mayoría de estos estudios se le asigna un valor de VIII como intensidad máxima. Con base en el estudio de Salcedo Hurtado y Castaño Castaño (2011), y mediante el método de Bakun y Wentworth (1997) y la relación de atenuación de la intensidad macrosísmica propuesta por Gómez Capera y Salcedo Hurtado (2002), se calculó la magnitud m b = 6,9±0,2 y la localización del epicentro macrosísmico (4,78 latitud; -73,90 longitud) a 28 km de Bogotá. La validación de la relación de atenuación se realizó con los parámetros instrumentales del terremoto del 24 de mayo de 2008, localizado en la misma zona mesosísmica del sismo histórico aquí analizado.Palabras clave: estudio de terremoto histórico, intensidad macrosísmica, parámetros del terremoto. Calculation of the location and magnitude of the 1785 earthquake in Colombia based on macroseismic intensity data AbstractThe earthquake that hit Colombia on July 12, 1785, is one of the seismic events with the highest number of macroseismic studies based on historical sources. Most of these studies have assigned a maximum intensity of VIII to the event. Following the study of Salcedo Hurtado and Castaño Castaño (2011), and applying the Bakun and Wentworth (1997) method and the macroseismic intensity attenuation proposed by Gómez Capera and Salcedo Hurtado (2002), we calculated the magnitude m b = 6.9±0.2 and the macroseismic epicentre at 28 km from Bogotá. The validation of the attenuation model was performed with the instrumental parameters of the earthquake occurred on May 24, 2008, in the same region of the historical earthquake studied in the present article.
