Glavne značajke reaktora IRIS (International Reactor Innovative and Secure) date su u ovom članku. IRIS je integralni, modularni, lakovodni reaktor srednje snage (335 MWe). Projekt reaktora IRIS razvija međunarodni konzorcij od dvadesetak organizacija iz deset zemalja predvođenih kompanijom Westinghouse. Primarni cilj projekta je razviti siguran, pouzdan i ekonomičan reaktor male do srednje snage. U članku je opisana integralna reaktorska posuda koja osim jezgre reaktora, moderatora, kontrolnih šipki i reflektora neutrona sadrži parogeneratore, reaktorske pumpe, mehanizme kontrolnih šipki i tlačnik. Jedinstvene sigurnosne karakteristike (,,safety-by-design) omogućile su manje i jednostavnije pasivne sigurnosne sustave. Poboljšana sigurnost i pouzdanost, ekonomičnost, te mogućnost postupne izgradnje novih kapaciteta uz relativno male investicije čine IRIS naročito privlačnim za manje elektroenergetske sustave.

In order to glean some insight into the likely trends in the next 50 years of power generation, the major trends of the last 50 years are reviewed first of all. It is noted that not only were all the power generating systems in operation today being researched in the 1960s, but so were most of those now being discussed for the future. The major trends in generation have all been driven by political and environmental considerations rather than by radically new ideas.For the next 50 years, in a new environment of concern about climate change and security of electricity supply, new technology must be developed to make some more of the options economically viable. This article surveys most of the systems now being considered and picks out a few of the enabling technologies. With such a broad subject, selectivity in the choice of sources is inevitable: this review draws preferentially upon papers published in the Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part A: Journal of Power and Energy over the last 10 years.

The integral water reactor design (i.e. a design where all primary system components—steam generators, pumps, pressurizer and even control rod drive mechanisms-are within the reactor vessel) is presented here. A background discussion of how integral designs were introduced in the 1990s is provided, followed by a description of one of those designs, the safe integral reactor (SIR). The rest of the article is then devoted to the international reactor innovative and secure (IRIS) which is currently being developed by an international consortium led by Westinghouse and including 20 + members from 10 nations. In discussing how IRIS has furthered the integral reactor concept, the design characteristics of IRIS are described along with its unique approach to safety, which focuses on exploiting the integral configuration to eliminate by design the occurrence of accidents in lieu of coping with their consequences. The IRIS safety approach is so successful that seven of eight class IV accidents (the accidents that could eventually lead to a radioactive release to the environment) typical of loop PWRs are either eliminated or downgraded, and thus it is being considered to pursue the licensing of IRIS without the requirement for off-site emergency response. The main characteristics of the IRIS safety by design are provided along with a discussion of its licensing approach.
