The invasive moth Paysandisia archon in Europe: Biology and control options

Abstract: The palm borer moth (Paysandisia archon, Burmeister) is a member of the Castniidae family originally from South America and is currently included in the A2 list of the OEPP/EPPO. This moth was introduced to Europe in 2000 through ornamental palms. Since its accidental introduction, it has become a major threat for natural stands of native palms, as well as for nurseries and gardens in the Mediterranean basin. To date, neither preventive nor control methods have been implemented for managing this pest under fie… Show more

“…This new isoscape could be useful for tracing regional dispersal or migration of insects across the western Palearctic, including both bidirectional migration and one‐way dispersive behavior. For example, the isoscape would be applicable to trace forest pest dispersal of moths within European forests 69–71 . It would also be applicable to trace north–south migration routes and connectivity between Mediterranean, temperate and boreal realms 72,73 …”

“…Among the invertebrate herbivores, the alien invasive moth P. archon is spreading all over the island and its attack on the dwarf palm is getting worrisome (Ruiz et al, 2017 ). This neotropical moth was first reported in Mallorca in 2003 (Sarto i Monteys & Aguilar, 2005 ) and it has been recorded in more than 10 European countries so far, becoming a serious pest of palm trees (Muñoz‐Adalia & Colinas, 2020 ). Adult flight and egg laying happen from mid‐May to late September.…”

“…The invasive Neotropical moth Paysandisia archon Burmeister (Castniidae, Lepidoptera) is spreading worldwide, having been recorded in more than 10 European countries so far. It is becoming a serious pest of palm trees, especially for C. humilis (Muñoz-Adalia and Colinas 2020 ). It was first reported in Mallorca in 2003 (Sarto i Monteys and Aguilar 2005 ), and its attack on the natural dwarf palm populations of the island is becoming alarming, with up to 40% of the individuals infested in some areas (Ruiz et al 2018 ; Muñoz-Gallego et al 2022 ).…”
