Exploiting the fact that natural languages are complex systems, the present exploratory article proposes a direct method based on frequency distributions that may be useful when making a decision on the status of problematic phonemes, an open problem in linguistics. The main notion is that natural languages, which can be considered from a complex outlook as information processing machines, and which somehow manage to set appropriate levels of redundancy, already "made the choice" whether a linguistic unit is a phoneme or not, and this would be reflected in a greater smoothness in a frequency versus rank graph. For the particular case we chose to study, we conclude that it is reasonable to consider the Spanish semiconsonant /w/ as a separate phoneme from its vowel counterpart /u/, on the one hand, and possibly also the semiconsonant /j/ as a separate phoneme from its vowel counterpart /i/, on the other. As language has been so central a topic in the study of complexity, this discussion grants us, in addition, an opportunity to gain insight into emerging properties in the broader complex systems debate.

“…En la presente investigación se discuten los factores lingüísticos y extralingüísticos que condicionan el deslizamiento de los hiatos en el español de la Ciudad de México bajo la Teoría de la Optimidad. Se han propuesto varias hipótesis sobre el condicionamiento del deslizamiento de hiatos a diptongos: (i) fonético (Chitorán & Hualde 2007); (ii) estructural (Martínez-Paricio 2010;2010b;2013); (iii) funcional (=frecuencia) (López Escobedo 2004); y (iv) social (Vuskovich 2006). En este trabajo se argumenta que el factor más importante es (ii) el factor estructural, precisando que una alteración en el orden jerárquico de las restricciones fonológicas es la responsable de la variación interna capturada mediante la teoría de cofonologías (Inkelas et al 1997;Inkelas & Zoll 2007; Inkelas 2014: capítulo 2) que indica que una lengua puede tener múltiples gramáticas.…”

En la presente investigación se discuten los factores lingüísticos y extralin-güísticos que condicionan el deslizamiento de los hiatos en el español de la Ciudad de México bajo la Teoría de la Optimidad. Se han propuesto varias hipótesis sobre el condicionamiento del deslizamiento de hiatos a dipton-gos: (i) fonético (Chitorán & Hualde 2007); (ii) estructural (Martínez-Paricio 2010; 2010b; 2013); (iii) funcional (=frecuencia) (López Escobedo 2004); y (iv) social (Vuskovich 2006). En este trabajo se argumenta que el factor más importante es (ii) el factor estructural, precisando que una alteración en el orden jerárquico de las restricciones fonológicas es la responsable de la variación interna capturada mediante la teoría de cofonologías (Inkelas et al. 1997; Inkelas & Zoll 2007; Inkelas 2014: capítulo 2) que indica que una lengua puede tener múltiples gramáticas. Con este análisis se pretende dar una aproximación explicativa al fenómeno de recategorización (Ohala 1993; Hualde 2011; Company 2014) de hiatos a diptongos para esta variante.

Spanish has a contrastive stress system with three major possibilities: antepenultimate, penultimate, and final stress. While penultimate and final stress are to some extent predictable, a major point of contention in the literature is whether antepenultimate stress assignment is rule-governed (Harris 1983; Roca 1991; i.a.). By examining different analogical and grammatically-informed models and their predictive power in capturing experimental data, I show that a Maximum Entropy model (Hayes & Wilson 2008) that includes syllable weight in its lexical representations is the best predictor of antepenultimate stress assignment. In doing so, I also dispute the claim that the trill in Spanish is a geminate tap (Harris 1983), and provide support for its status as a singleton consonant.
