The Intervention of Brain Gym in Increasing the Quality of Life on The Elderly

Abstract: This research aims to find the effect of Brain Gym interventions in improving the quality of life in the elderly after controlling with the confounding variables are age, sex, and education. This research is experimental research with pre and post-test group design and randomizes design. The sample determination based on the inclusion criteria. The sample is 66 people, divided into two groups of 33 respondents respectively. The determination of the group by using the randomize table, then conducted a pre-test … Show more

“…Taher (2015) stated that an eight-week intervention with multi-sensory stimulation had a significant effect on cognitive function and quality of life in the elderly. In this study, there were 10 activities used to stimulate the sensors in the form of gymnastics (Wahyuni & Arifiati 2021), listening to music (Wattanasoei, et al 2017), gardening (Soga, et al 2017), leisure making fruit salad (Nurhidayah, 2018), paired balloon dancing (Hernandes, et al 2018), games such as throwing a ball into a basket, moving marbles by walking on a line (Gray, 2020), brain games playing guessing pictures (McLaughlin, et al 2018), smell sensation such as guessing the aroma, taste , texture (Zambom-Ferraresi, et al 2021), brain gym such as guessing pictures (Andi, et al 2019).…”

“…The activity of guessing the aroma, taste and texture stimulates the olfactory, namely when guessing the aroma of the food and then the gustatory when tasting the taste and texture of the food. Andi et al (2019) stated that brain gym games can improve cognitive function, which is good for improving quality of life. Voice instruction game activities can train cognitive abilities with a series of movements that stimulate the brain (Lasmini & Sunarno, 2022).…”

“…This positive effect of exercise on cognition has been related to an increment of hippocampal volume (a structure which is sensitive to exercise induced change via neurogenesis and cell proliferation) and level of Brain derived neurotrophic factor (involved in cell growth and survival and memory promotion). [9] The regular performance of Brain Gym exercises results in stimulation and integration of different parts of the brain, especially the corpus callosum, which in the long term, makes communication between the two hemispheres faster and in a more integrated form for high level reasoning (Dennison, 1985). [9] 16 Apparently when the brain becomes balanced, our whole body responds, revitalising the natural healing mechanism, restoring health and harmony.…”

“…Various studies have highlighted the benefit of the Brain Gym method, for example, it has been reported that this type of stimulation benefits motor and social skills ( Jalilinasab et al, 2021 ), quality of life ( Andi et al, 2019 ), skills ( Kulkarni and Khandale, 2019 ), improves health balance in patients with neuropathies ( Panse et al, 2018 ), improves concentration for online learning ( Pratiwi and Pratama, 2020 ; Anggraini and Dewi, 2022 ), and reduction of fatigue and muscle pain ( Ismayenti et al, 2021 ) among other research that indicates the positive contribution of this method.…”
