The interleukin-6/interleukin-6-receptorsystem is activated in donor hearts

Abstract: The expression of the IL6 receptor components in the donor heart before transplantation establishes the condition sine qua non for the response of the donor heart to circulating IL6. This mechanism may explain the close association of elevated IL6 serum levels to acute cardiac allograft dysfunction in the early perioperative period.

“…IL-6 is a proinflammatory cytokine that has numerous effects on T cell activation, differentiation, and recruitment (66)(67)(68). In the context of transplantation, increased levels of IL-6 correlated with adverse outcomes in human allograft recipients (69,70). IL-6 is known to inhibit the function of natural Tregs (71), as well as the induction of iTregs (52).…”

“…This understanding can lead to the explanation of association between elevated serum IL6 concentrations and acute cardiac allograft dysfunction in the early postoperative period. 53) Myocardial and serum IL-6 levels from donors with myocardial dysfunction (unused donors), from donors with good ventricular function (used donors), and from patients with advanced heart failure were examined. Increased expression of IL-6 in the myocardium of all donor hearts showing marked dysfunction was found.…”

“…IL6 is significantly associated with breast cancer (Hefler et al, 2005), lung cancer (Noponen-Hietala et al, 2005), intervertebral disc disease (NoponenHietala et al, 2005), and neuroblastoma (Egler et al, 2008). The expression of IL6 receptor components in the myocardium of donor hearts before transplantation was investigated by Plenz et al (2002).…”
