The interdisciplinary engineering knowledge genome

Abstract: Parallel to the concept of the human genome and its impact on biology and other disciplines, we revealed a similar concept in engineering sciences, termed the ''Interdisciplinary Engineering Knowledge Genome'', which is an organized collection of system and method ''genes'' that encode instructions for generating new systems and methods in diverse engineering disciplines. Resting on the firm mathematical foundation of combinatorial representations, the Interdisciplinary Engineering Knowledge Genome unifies man… Show more

“…Works have been done on design and logic, based on the notion of imaginative constructivism (Hendriks andKazakçi 2010, 2011;Kazakçi 2013); on design and models of independence like matroid Le Masson et al 2015b) ; on design and set theory, showing that there is a general design theory within set theory called Forcing (Hatchuel and Weil 2007;Hatchuel et al 2013b); and on design and category theory (Giesa et al 2015, Breiner andSubrahmanian 2016). This led to novel results on generative functions (forcing, fractality…), to new approaches of system engineering (Kokshagina 2014), to the notion of the interdisciplinary engineering knowledge genome (Reich and Shai 2012), etc.…”

“…Our focus is motivated by the fundamental understanding that ideation is the analogical transfer, synthesis, blending, or transformation of existing technologies or knowledge into new ones (Weisberg, 2006; Linsey, 2007; Arthur, 2009; Hatchuel and Weil, 2009; Taura and Nagai, 2012). However, a designer's prior knowledge and expertise may influence his or her ability to conceive the relevance of other technologies, in particular those in distant domains (Shai and Reich, 2004; Hatchuel and Weil, 2009; Reich and Shai, 2012).…”

“…Shai and Reich (Reich and Shai 2012;Shai and Reich 2004) developed approaches to analogical retrieval of knowledge structures and processes that allow the use of across domains. A system was developed by Ahmed for helping designers to index and build a knowledge network based on engineering designer queries, which generates associations between concepts, with the end goal of aiding in the search for information, reformulation of a query, and prompting design tasks (Ahmed 2005).…”
