The inner workings of anxiety in second language learning

Peter D. MacIntyre,
Molly F. McGillivray

Abstract: The paper examines anxiety as an important emotion for language learning and communication, using the intraindividual, dynamic emotional experience as a grounding for understanding the antecedents and consequences of anxiety arousal. The bulk of the existing literature, as reflected in three recent meta-analyses, treats language anxiety as a stable individual difference (ID) factor, documenting its correlations with test performance, course grades, and other indices of language proficiency. “…The spotlight on achievement emotions (e.g., enjoyment, shame, anxiety) has been prevalent within general education (Harley et al, 2019;Pekrun, 2006). Similarly, in the context of second language learning, there exists a notable emphasis on specific emotions (e.g., anxiety, enjoyment) and their impact on the language learning process (Dewaele, 2015;Dörnyei & Ryan, 2015;MacIntyre & McGillivray, 2023;Xie, 2021). “…Teachers' worries and concerns can be aroused during teaching activities, which can impede their teaching effectiveness, emotional well-being and professional development (Parsons, 1973;Gardner & Leak, 1994;Sinclair & Ryan, 1987). Compared with the extensive research on FL learners' anxiety (e.g., Lin, 2022;MacIntyre & McGillivray, 2023), language teachers' anxiety still has not received enough attention (e.g., Goetze, 2023;Liu & Wu, 2021).…”
