Properties of asphalt mixtures after ageing are fundamental parameters in determining longterm performance (e.g. durability) of these materials. With increasing popularity of reduced temperature mixtures, such as warm-mix asphalt, WMA, the question remains how a reduction in short-term ageing affects the properties after long-term ageing of bituminous materials. This paper aims to improve our understanding of the effect of asphalt manufacturing temperature on ageing and the resulting mechanical properties of bituminous binder by studying the effect of short-and long-term ageing of different bitumen samples as a function of short-term ageing temperatures. For this purpose, round robin experiments were conducted within the RILEM technical committee (TC) 252 chemo-mechanical characterisation of bituminous materials by 10 laboratories from 5 countries using four binders of the same grade (70/100 pen) from different crude sources. The short-term ageing was carried out using the standard procedure for rolling thin film oven test (RTFOT), but varying the temperatures. Long-term ageing was carried out using the standard procedure for pressure aging vessel (PAV) in addition to RTFOT. For the mechanical characterisation, rheological data were determined by using the dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and conventional tests, with needle penetration and softening point using the ring and ball method. The results show that although different short-term ageing temperatures showed a significant difference in the mechanical properties of the binders, these differences vanished after long-term ageing with PAV.Keywords: bitumen; DSR; long-term ageing; short-term ageing; asphalt; RTFOT; PAV IntroductionAs an organic material, bitumen undergoes changes in its mechanical characteristics, chemical composition and microstructure due to environmental effects over its lifetime (Glotova, Gorshkov, Kats, Shapiro, & Yureva, 1980;Lee, Tia, Ruth, & Page, 1997;Mills-Beale et al., 2012;Yao, Dai, & You, 2015). Loss of volatile components at elevated temperatures and oxidation are two main factors for these changes. In terms of mechanical properties, bitumen tends to become stiffer, more elastic and brittle over time. A UV absorber, p-methycinnamic acid (PMCA), was intercalated into Zn-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) by calcination recovery. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that the PMCA anions completely replaced the CO32− anions in the interlayer galleries of Zn-Al-LDH containing PMCA anions (Zn-Al-PMCA-LDH). X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy showed that the interlayer distance increased from 0.78 nm to 1.82 nm after the substitution of PMCA anions for CO32− anions. The similar diffraction angles of the CO32− anion-containing Zn-Al-LDH (Zn-Al-CO32−-LDH) and the Zn-Al-CO32−-LDH/styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) modified asphalt implied that the asphalt molecules do not enter into the LDH interlayer galleries to form separated-phase structures. The different diffraction angles of Zn-Al-PMCA-LDH and Zn-Al-PMCA-LDH/SBS modified asphalt indicated that the asphalt molecules penetrated into the LDH interlayer galleries to form an expanded-phase structure. UV-Vis absorbance analyses showed that Zn-Al-PMCA-LDH was better able to block UV light due to the synergistic effects of PMCA and Zn-Al-LDH. Conventional physical tests and atomic force microscopy images of the SBS modified asphalt, Zn-Al-CO32−-LDH/SBS modified asphalt and Zn-Al-PMCA-LDH/SBS modified asphalt before and after UV aging indicated that Zn-Al-PMCA-LDH improved the UV aging resistance of SBS modified asphalts.

The prevention of the ultraviolet (UV) aging of styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS)‐modified bitumen is of great significance because UV aging is considered to be a critical factor in the deterioration of the performance of bituminous roads. In this study, we selected two UV absorbers (octabenzone and bumetrizole) as modifiers to evaluate their effects on the rheological and UV‐aging properties of different SBS‐modified bitumens (linear and radial types) by means of dynamic shear rheological testing. The thermooxidative aging of the binders was also investigated through thin‐film oven testing. The results show that for the linear‐ and radial‐SBS‐modified bitumens, octabenzone only enhanced their elasticity at high temperatures, but bumetrizole could increase the elastic response at intermediate temperatures on the one hand and the viscous response at high temperatures on the other hand. The UV aging of the radial‐SBS‐modified bitumens could effectively be alleviated by both octabenzone and bumetrizole, whereas that of the linear ones could only be improved by bumetrizole. The influence of the UV absorbers on the thermooxidative‐aging properties of the SBS‐modified bitumens was dependent on the types of UV absorbers and SBS polymers. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J.
