Rheological and aging properties of ultraviolet absorber/styrene–butadiene–styrene–modified bitumens

Abstract: The prevention of the ultraviolet (UV) aging of styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS)‐modified bitumen is of great significance because UV aging is considered to be a critical factor in the deterioration of the performance of bituminous roads. In this study, we selected two UV absorbers (octabenzone and bumetrizole) as modifiers to evaluate their effects on the rheological and UV‐aging properties of different SBS‐modified bitumens (linear and radial types) by means of dynamic shear rheological testing. The thermooxi… Show more

“…However, the low-temperature performance of SMB was decreased after adding a large amount of MMT. Feng et al [ 14 ] discovered that UV absorbers can reduce the UV aging of SMB, but the effect of UV absorbers was not universal, which only worked for specific types of SMB. In addition, some inorganic nanomaterials were reported to improve the aging resistance of SMB in some research, such as nano-SiO 2 , nano-ZnO, nano-TiO 2 and so on [ 15 , 16 ].…”

“…In recent years, some antiaging agents have been utilized to improve the anti-aging ability of SMB, such as antioxidants, UV absorbents, inorganic nanoparticles, layered silicate, and so on. [9][10][11] These modifying agents can all improve the anti-aging ability of SMB to different extents, but there are some imperfections in these modifying agents, for instance, antioxidants can only improve the thermal oxidation aging resistance of SMB and the sustaining action is limited. The improvement effect of UV absorbents on the anti-aging is closely linked to the types of SMB.…”

“…Styrene–butadiene–styrene triblock copolymer (SBS)-modified bitumen (SMB) has been widely used in the construction of high-grade highways for its excellent performance. However, the performance of SMB would also gradually deteriorate with the influence of high temperature, ultraviolet rays, and overload over time, which would shorten its service life. In addition, the pavement renovation will produce large amounts of the waste SBS-modified bitumen mixture.…”
