The influence of upwelling on the diversity and distribution of marine shrimp (Penaeoidea and Caridea) in two tropical coastal areas of southeastern Brazil

Abstract: Two coastal locations situated inside and outside an upwelling area were investigated to assess the influence of environmental factors on the structure of marine shrimp assemblages. The locations were Macaé in the state of Rio de Janeiro (RJ), influenced by upwelling from Cabo Frio (RJ), and Ubatuba in the state of São Paulo, with no upwelling. Samples were collected monthly with trawl nets, in three sites in each location at depths of 5-20 m. The relationship between species abundance and environmental factor… Show more

“…Three different stations were sampled every month to minimize possible effects of local conditions within each region ( Figure 1). F I G U R E 1 Map of the study areas (Macaé and Ubatuba) and the respective sampling stations (taken from Pantaleão et al, 2016) Sampling was performed during the day in both regions simultaneously in two different years, from July 2010 to June 2011 (year 1) and from July 2013 to June 2014 (year 2). For temporal analysis, seasons were standardized as follows: winter-from July to September; spring-from October to December; summer-from January to March; autumn-from April to June.…”

“…Periclimenes paivai is a small shrimp (maximum size = 9.2 mm CL [carapace length]- [32][33][34]), endemic to the western Atlantic coast, and is restricted to shallow waters from Rio de Janeiro to Santa Catarina, Brazil [35,36]. Periclimenes paivai has been considered a facultative commensal shrimp [33].…”

“…Periclimenes paivai has been considered a facultative commensal shrimp [33]. However, there are no records of P. paivai exhibiting a free-living lifestyle [35,36]. Periclimenes paivai is the only Brazilian species in the genus found on the surface of scyphozoan jellyfish; Phyllorhiza punctata von Lendenfeld, 1884 (as Mastigias sp.- [32]), L. lucerna, and Chrysaora lactea Eschscholtz, 1829 [33,34].…”

“…Even though these two caridean species are currently not commercially exploited, they are part of the trophic structure of softbottom environments. Additionally, N. schmitti and E. oplophoroides are the most abundant species among the caridean shrimps in Macaé region, an area located near of the upwelling in the Cabo Frio region (Silva et al, 2014;Pantaleão et al, 2016). These authors studied the composition and assemblages of shrimps (Penaeoidea and Caridea) in this region; however, the knowledge about the spatial and temporal distribution of the species in this area is scarce.…”

“…The Rio de Janeiro State has the highest fishery productivity of the southeastern region of Brazil (IBAMA, 2007) (Burkenroad, 1936) (Costa et al, 2000;Fransozo et al, 2009;Pantaleão et al, 2016). The impact of bottom-trawl shrimp fishing in coastal locations has caused significant losses in the biomass and biodiversity of non-consolidated environments (Pauly et al, 2002;Castilho et al, 2008).…”
