The Cabo Frio upwelling overrides geographical patterns in the population dynamics of the shrimp Artemesia longinaris Spence Bate, 1888 (Decapoda: Penaeidae)

Abstract: Upwelling areas are among the most productive ecosystems on the planet, influencing the biology of marine organisms. This study investigated the population dynamics of the shrimp Artemesia longinaris in two regions in southeastern Brazil, one inside (Macaé—Rio de Janeiro State) and one outside (Ubatuba—State of São Paulo) the Cabo Frio upwelling area. The aim was to verify the influence of the upwelling phenomenon on the abundance, growth, longevity, size of sexual maturity, and reproductive period of the spec… Show more

“…The coastal upwelling system of Cabo Frio (Carvalho‐Batista, Pantaleão, et al, 2019; Pantaleão et al, 2016; Pescinelli et al, 2018), for example, directly influences seabob shrimp growth characteristics in the Macaé region despite its tropical latitude (22°37′S). The environmental conditions (i.e., temperature and salinity) differ from those commonly found in tropical regions (see Pantaleão et al, 2016; Sancinetti et al, 2014, 2015).…”

“…Four areas on the southeastern coast of Brazil were evaluated (Figure 1). Macaé (22°37′S, 41°78′W) in Rio Janeiro State is directly influenced by the Cabo Frio upwelling zone, characterized by productive and cooler waters that are around 20°C during most of the year (Carvalho‐Batista, Pantaleão, et al, 2019; Pantaleão et al, 2016; Valentin, 1984). Ubatuba (23°27′S, 45°03′W), located in the northern part of São Paulo State, is characterized by a narrow, jagged coastal plain with many bays (Ab’Saber, 1955; Mahiques, 1995).…”

“…Pantaleão et al (2016) evaluated an assemblage of marine shrimps (Penaeoidea and Caridea) and the highest richness, diversity, and evenness were recorded in areas under the upwelling influence. Davanso et al (2017) and Carvalho-Baptista et al (2019) studied the population biology of Xiphopenaeus kroyeri (Heller, 1862) and A. longinaris, and pointed out that lower temperatures were probably responsible for the longer longevity of individuals in this area. Andrade et al (2014) verified that areas affected by different phenomena changed the composition, abundance, and assemblage structure of swimming crabs (Portunoidea), that is, Arenaeus cribrarius (Lamarck, 1818), Callinectes danae Smith, 1869, Callinectes ornatus Ordway, 1863 and Achelous spinicarpus Stimpson, 1871.…”
