The article presents an analysis of priority solutions for trams at a selected sequence of intersections in Warsaw (Poland). An analysis of the literature has shown the topicality of this issue. A computer simulation model of a coordinated sequence of intersections was constructed. Three test scenarios were designed: the existing control system, the new coordinated fixed-time control system, and the adaptive control system with active priority. In the simulation process, detailed travel characteristics of trams and other traffic participants in a selected section were obtained for the three varying scenarios. Electric energy consumption for traction needs and pollutant emissions was then estimated for each of the variants. It was concluded that for the analyzed configuration, implementation of the adaptive priority will result in a reduction of tram time losses by up to 25%, a reduction in energy consumption by up to 23%, and a reduction in the emission of pollutants from individual vehicles by up to 3% in relation to the original variant. The conducted research may be the basis for a comprehensive method of assessing the effectiveness of applying the adaptative priority when designing new tramway lines and modernizing the existing ones.

Modern urban and metropolitan areas face numerous problems associated with transport activity, such as pollution, congestion, noise or traffic incidents. One of the solutions to cope with these issues may be encouraging people to use means of public transport instead of private cars. However, that requires the fulfillment of demands that present, as well as potential, passengers have. One of the most important passengers' demands is safety of all operations of public transport. In case of tram transport one aspect of safety is associated with the process of boarding the tram and alighting from it at stops separated from tram tracks by roadway, which forces passengers to enter the road. It is hazardous for all passengers and poses an additional risk for disabled passengers. In this paper an analysis of interactions between tram passengers and drivers of road vehicles at such tram stops, during the boarding and alighting from the tram was performed. For that purpose also a classification of tram stops stations was conducted, with the number of traffic lanes that passengers have to pass through being the main criterion. Also, the review of literature on this subject was conducted. For the research during the pilot study the tram network in Metropolis GZM in southern Poland was chosen and all tram stops stations on the network were inspected in order to obtain characteristics necessary for classification. Research during this pilot study allowed to identify conflict interactions that take place at tram stops. Examples of such interactions have been presented in the paper. Paper also contains conclusions and propositions of changes that may be implemented at tram stops that may lead to increase of the level of safety of passengers who try to board the tram or alight from the tram.

Impact of Application of Selected Composite Materials on the Weight and Vibroactivity of the Upper Gearbox Housing

In this paper, exploratory studies on the application of fibre-reinforced polymer composites in the construction of gearbox housing elements that are used for transport means, as an alternative to traditionally used materials, were undertaken. Composite materials with three types of reinforcement were used: a glass-chopped strand mat, glass fabric, and carbon fabric. The manufactured elements were subjected to weight assessment and vibroactivity tests, including the recording of vibration and noise. The obtained results were compared to the values recorded for housings made of steel. It has been found that composite housings, while maintaining geometric similarity, are characterised by at least 60% lower weight compared to steel housings. It has been shown that in the frequency range below 1 kHz, composite housings are characterised by the presence of resonant frequencies with higher amplitudes than steel housings. At higher frequency ranges—above 1 kHz—composite housings had a lower vibroactivity level than steel housing. They allowed a significant reduction in the level of vibration and noise in this frequency range. The results obtained indicate that composite gearbox housings can be a good alternative to steel-based solutions.
