The influence of the inclination of strong magnetic field lines on the performance and plume divergence of a magnetically shielded Hall thruster

Abstract: It has been recognized that the application of magnetic shielding technology deteriorates the plume divergence efficiency of a Hall thruster. To try to alleviate this effect, three magnetic shielding configurations with different inclination directions of the lines of force in the strong magnetic field region are designed via the introduction of a peripheral coil surrounding the thruster body, and their influence on the performance and plume divergence are experimentally evaluated in this study. The measured r… Show more

“…A Hall thruster is an electric propulsion device that ionizes a propellant gas with electrons confined by a magnetic field before accelerating the propellant ions with an electrostatic field. They have attracted the attention of electric propulsion researchers owing to their simple structure, long service life, economic characteristics, and high reliability [3][4][5][6]. Recently, interest in Hall thrusters has shifted from GEO station-keeping to deep-space exploration, which has also promoted the development of high-power and highspecific-impulse Hall thrusters [7,8].…”
