In this work we find that polyaniline (PANI), synthesized by aniline chemical polymerization at a surface of template polycarbonate (PC) particles, is significantly different in molecular weight, structural order, oxidation state, and conductivity from a neat PANI. Molecular weight of the PANI phase in the composite (Mw = 158,000) is 1.6 times higher than that of the neat PANI synthesized in the absence of the template particles. Moreover, XRD analysis shows that crystallinity of the PANI phase in the composite is three times higher than that of the neat PANI. Raman spectroscopy indicates that the oxidation level of PANI in the PC/PANI composite is lower than that of the neat PANI. These noticeable changes of the PANI phase properties suggest specific interactions of reagents in the polymerization medium and formed PANI with the template phase as well as an orientation effect of the latter surface. FTIR spectroscopy reveals that hydrogen bonding in the neat doped PANI is weaker than one between -NH- of PANI and C═O of PC at their interface. The discovered differences are supported by the fact that conductivity of the PANI phase in the composite is more than three times higher than that of the neat PANI.

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and ultrasonic force microscopy (UFM) have been used to study the properties of adsorption layers formed by two incompatible polymers, polystyrene and poly(butyl methacrylate), in the course of simultaneous adsorption on the surface of silica (naturally oxidized surface of a silicon wafer). The adsorption was performed from solutions containing both of the components in a common solvent (carbon tetrachloride) in dilute and semidilute concentration regimes. It was discovered that in both cases the structure of adsorption layers has a complex mosaic structure, the details of which depend on solution composition, on the solution concentration regime, and on the ratio of the components in the adsorption layer. The observed structural inhomogeneity on the length scale of approximately 200-500 nm (distribution of segment density revealed by UFM) appears as result of thermodynamic incompatibility in the system and is conditioned by changes in the conformation states of the adsorbed macromolecules in the route of competitive adsorption of the components. The adsorbed polymer films with thicknesses of approximately 20-500 nm appeared to have fractal properties and could be characterized with fractal dimensions dependent on the ratio of the components at the interface and the adsorption conditions.

Water-soluble synthetic polymers (WSPs) are distinct from insoluble plastic particles, which are both critical components of synthetic polymers. In the history of human-made macromolecules, WSPs have consistently portrayed a crucial role and served as the ingredients of a variety of products (e.g., flocculants, thickeners, solubilizers, surfactants, etc.) commonly used in human society. However, the environmental exposures and risks of WSPs with different functions remain poorly understood. This paper provides a critical review of the usage, environmental fate, environmental persistence, and biological consequences of multiple types of WSPs in commercial and industrial production. Investigations have identified a wide market of applications and potential environmental threats of various types of WSPs, but we still lack the suitable assessment tools. The effects of physicochemical properties and environmental factors on the environmental distribution as well as the transport and transformation of WSPs are further summarized. Evidence regarding the degradation of WSPs, including mechanical, thermal, hydrolytic, photoinduced, and biological degradation is summarized, and their environmental persistence is discussed. The toxicity data show that some WSPs can cause adverse effects on aquatic species and microbial communities through intrinsic toxicity and physical hazards. This review may serve as a guide for environmental risk assessment to help develop a sustainable path for WSP management.
