The influence of pressure sum, fiber blend ratio, and basis weight on wet strength and dispersibility of wood pulp/Lyocell wetlaid/spunlace nonwovens

Abstract: Wetlaid/spunlace(wetlace) nonwovens with sufficient wet strength in use and disintegration under flow field can be widely used in dispersible moist wipes. To achieve superior properties, wood pulp/Lyocell wetlace nonwovens at different process parameters including pressure sum (sum of each Jet Head pressure), Lyocell blend ratio, and basis weight were prepared. Meanwhile, the effects of these process parameters on the wet strength and dispersibility of materials were investigated. The results show that the wet… Show more

“…Findings from composite material science suggest that swelling of cellulosic materials continues for up to 168 h 44 , 45 or even longer 46 . Fibres in a wet wipe are entangled with each other building different types of ribbons and knots 33 , 37 . Swelling increases the dimensions of the fibre and reduces fibre stiffness which could cause the described ribbons and knots to tighten and therefore enhancing the strength of the wet wipe.…”

“…Conventional wet wipes are non-dispersible and non-degradable due to the addition of chemical fibers or nonwoven fabrics [ 7 , 69 , 70 ]. By introducing the synthetic NVP-GMA adhesive, the resultant NVP-GMA cellulose-based wet wipe substrate is successfully made of the pure natural cellulose fibers, and thus the final degradation can be achieved.…”

“…[ [4] , [5] , [6] ]. The wet wipe products on the market are mainly made of the non-woven, which have some shortcomings in terms of the comfort, the water absorption ratio and the degradability [ [7] , [8] , [9] ]. According to a new market research report by Smithers Pira, “2024: The Future of Global Nonwovens”, surgical cavity towels and surgical gowns, including other surgical kit components, account for all medical non-woven markets by value and tonnage 67%.…”

“…The lyocell fiber entangles efficiently during spunlace process because its fibrillar structure plasticizes in wet state [48]. 60-40% wood pulp-Lyocell (1.7 dtex and 12 mm) wetlace nonwovens (80 g/m 2 ) had dispersion critical values with maximum wet strength (19 N/50 mm) at the pressure sum of 190 bars [51].…”
