The influence of maternal and child characteristics and paternal support on interactions of mothers and their medically fragile infants

Abstract: The influences of maternal characteristics, infant characteristics, and paternal support on maternal positive involvement and developmental stimulation were examined over time in 59 mothers and their medically fragile infants using an ecological framework. Higher maternal education was associated with greater maternal positive involvement. More maternal depressive symptoms, more infant technological dependence, and lower birthweights were associated with less maternal positive involvement at 6 months but great… Show more

“…Sosyal destek sağlamanın hem annedeki depresyon hem de annebebek ilişkisi üzerine olumlu etkileri olduğu bilinmektedir. “…Research suggests that mothers of preterm infants report reduced confidence in their ability to parent (Hess, Teti, & Hussey-Gardner, 2004;McGrath, Boukydis, & Lester, 1993). In addition mood disorders affect maternal responsiveness and are associated with poor child development (Eshel, Daelmans, Cabral de Mello, & Martines, 2006;Lee, Holditch-Davis, & Miles, 2007). Less is known about how fathers cope, as they are under-represented in the research (Carter, Mulder, Bartram, & Darlow, 2005;Doucette & Pinelli, 2004).…”
