The Influence of Location on Productivity: Manufacturing Technology in Rural and Urban Areas

Abstract: Policies to counter the growing discrepancy between economic opportunities in rural and urban areas have focused predominantly on expanding manufacturing in rural areas. Fundamental to the design of these strategies are the relative costs of production and productivity of manufacturing in rural and urban areas. This study aims to develop information that can be used to assess the productivity of manufacturing in rural and urban areas. Production functions are estimated in the meat products and household furnit… Show more

“…Table 4 shows productivity and efficiency gains 19 either with public delivery or private contractors. As this paper uses a cost function approach, a smaller value of residual represents a better TFP level (Bae, 2009; Lichtenberg and Siegel, 1987; Martin, McHugh, and Johnson, 1991). These residuals were obtained from the estimated translog cost function in Model 2 in Table 2.…”

“…To compare the productivity level between public delivery and private contractors, the value of residual in each municipality is employed, because it is the logarithmic deviation of its total factor productivity (TFP) level from the average productivity of all municipalities (Bae, 2009; Lichtenberg and Siegel, 1987; Martin, McHugh, and Johnson, 1991). As this paper employs a cost function approach for empirical estimation, a smaller value of residual represents a better TFP level.…”

“…Other researchers have examined whether a taxing jurisdiction is better off with than without a new industry after accounting for the costs of the incentives (Martin, McHugh, & Johnson, 1993). With respect to the net benefits from business incentive programs at the community level, much of the analysis has focused on the effect of the incentive package on local government's ability to provide public goods (Downs, 1997).…”

“…There is a rich body of literature examining various relationships among U.S. industries in terms of wages, productivity, and other business-related characteristics (Doms et al 1997;McGuckin and Pascoe 1988). Studies have also examined interindustry differences in productivity and wages across locations (Bernat 1994;1995;Ciccone and Hall 1996;Gale 1998;Glaeser and Mare 1994;Martin et al 1993). Few studies, however, have used the LRD data to determine the extent to which entry and exit rates of firms differ across locations (see Davis et al 1996 for a brief examination of broad regions' entry and exit rates).…”
