A numerical model for hypergolic combustion within a four-stroke heat-barrier piston engine has been developed. An idealized fuel injector simulates the type of injector used in current experimental hypergolic combustion research. Significant to the modeling of this injector is the need to overcome the problems posed by a unit Mach number boundary condition at the injector orifice opening. Overall, the model is used to simulate a compression stroke and fuel injection portion of apower stroke. An implicit mite-dijference solution of the governingflowfield equations is used. The engine is modeled with the fuel injector being colocated with a single valve, making possible an arisymmetric solution. Because of its physics, hypergolic combustion dictates an eddy dissipation combustion approach. I n thefinal run a 20 x 26 mesh is used for the greater region, which is made up of the flow field and a thin portion of the ¢ cylinder linings and piston.

A special two-cylinder military specific power plant was employed to evaluate the effect of thermal barrier coated pistons on overall engine performance at simulated low heat rejection-type operating conditions. This study focused on three combustion systems including a noncoated baseline ductile iron piston along with zirconia and chrome-oxide sealed zirconia coated analogs. For the test matrix encompassing ten full and half-load operating conditions, both coated piston combustion systems yielded a detrimental effect on fuel economy in comparison to the baseline combustion system at constant fueling and air consumption rates. These performance differences were attributed to a combination of combustion phasing modulations, injection timing discrepancies, and sluggish combustion associated with the zirconia coated piston configurations.

The major drawback of vegetable oil fuels is their high viscosity. Various conventional approaches to reducing the viscosity of vegetable oils are studied theoretically and experimentally. An attempt to reduce the viscosity of the palm oil methyl esters (POME) by preheating the fuel was performed and a comparison on the basis of its projected chance of leading to ‘diesel-like’ combustion was also carried out with conventional diesel fuel. It was observed that by preheating the POME fuel above the conventional temperature, the engine performance, especially the brake power output and the exhaust emissions characteristics, is improved significantly, approaching diesellike' performance. This is mainly attributed to the fact that as the fuel is preheated the viscosity is reduced close to ordinary diesel (OD) fuel. This will result in improved spray and atomization characteristics. Torque, brake power, specific fuel consumption, exhaust emissions and brake thermal efficiencies were measured and calculated. The potential for improved engine performance and reduction in emissions levels was demonstrated.
