Abstract:Reflective bands of Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper satellite imagery were used to facilitate the estimation of basal crop evapotranspiration (ETcb), or potential crop water use, in San Joaquin Valley fields during 2008. A ground-based digital camera measured green fractional cover (Fc) of 49 commercial fields planted to 18 different crop types (row crops, grains, orchard, vineyard) of varying maturity over 11 Landsat overpass dates. Landsat L1T terrain-corrected images were transformed to surface reflectance and converted to normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). A strong linear relationship between NDVI and Fc was observed (r 2 = 0.96, RMSE = 0.062). The resulting regression equation was used to estimate Fc for crop cycles of broccoli, bellpepper, head lettuce, and garlic on nominal 7-9 day intervals for several study fields. Prior relationships developed by weighing lysimeter were used to transform Fc to fraction of reference evapotranspiration, also known as basal crop coefficient (Kcb). Measurements of grass reference evapotranspiration from the California Irrigation Management Information System were then used to calculate ETcb for each overpass date. Temporal profiles of Fc, Kcb, and ETcb were thus developed for the study fields, along with estimates of seasonal water use. Daily ETcb retrieval uncertainty resulting from error in satellite-based Fc estimation was <0.5 mm/d, with seasonal uncertainty of 6-10%. RESUMO. O presente trabalho tem por objetivos avaliar os erros envolvidos no uso de evapotranspirômetros na determinação de relações entre o coeficiente de cultura do feijoeiro (kc) e a sua porcentagem de cobertura vegetal (%CVeg), calculadas para intervalos médios variando de um a dez dias e a influência desses intervalos nas relações obtidas, assim como comparar duas formas de análise de dados de kc. No experimento, conduzido no Instituto Agronômico (IAC) de Campinas, semeou-se o feijoeiro em quatro evapotranspirômetros. Por meio do balanço hídrico, determinou-se kc para os intervalos avaliados. Os principais erros levantados relacionam-se a entrada de água não controlada e ao maior desenvolvimento da cultura semeada no interior dos evapotranspirômetros em relação àquele da bordadura. A análise seqüencial permitiu o aumento na disponibilidade de dados para se derivar as relações estatisticamente significativas entre kc e %CVeg, para todas as formas de análise e intervalos avaliados.Palavras-chave: evapotranspiração, curva de cultura, evapotranspirômetros, feijoeiro.ABSTRACT. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the errors involved in the use of evapotranspirometers to determine the relation between the crop coefficient (kc) and the percentage of vegetative ground cover (%CVeg) of the bean plant, calculated for average intervals varying from one to ten days, and the influence of these intervals on the relations obtained, as well as to compare two ways of analyzing kc data. The experiment, which involved the sowing of beans in four evapotranspirometers, was conducted at the IACCampinas Institute of Agronomy. The kc was determined for the intervals evaluated here, based on the water balance. The main errors identified involved the uncontrolled entrance of water and the greater development of the plants sown inside the evapotranspirometers than those surrounding them. A sequential analysis allowed for a greater availability of data from which to derive the relations between kc and %CVeg, which were statistically significant in all the forms of analysis and intervals evaluated.
