The influence of a novel simulated learning environment upon student clinical subjective refraction performance: A pilot study

Abstract: Short-term exposure to a SLE can positively influence clinical subjective refraction outcomes for less experienced optometry students and may be of benefit in increasing the skills of novice refractionists to levels appropriate for commencing supervised clinical interactions.

“…This finding suggests that the early introduction of the VRPS into a study program is warranted, as introduction late in training yields equivocal transitional outcomes. 29 The findings are consistent with studies in other areas of health-care that describe the importance of virtual programs in the development of understanding, confidence and performance. 16,18,19,35,36 This report adds to the limited literature on simulation-based medical education in eye-care training, and on translational clinical performance outcomes.…”

“…However, face validity (the outward appearance) was relatively low and prompted a corporate-funded online version by the Brien Holden Vision Institute, first available in Asia, and then worldwide from 2015. 27 There has been only one reported study on the use of the VRPS, 29 which questioned its efficacy when instigated late in the training of optometrists.…”

“…Subjective refraction technique, which relies on a participant's feedback, involves placing a series of trial lenses before the eye until a clear retinal image is perceived by the participant. 20 Near vision was then assessed monocularly over distance refractive correction using a near Snellen chart, held at 40cm from the participants' eyes. A near version of the tumbling 'E' chart was used to assess the near visual acuity of illiterate participants.…”

“…Add up the converted responses for each participant and multiply that total by 2.5 to convert the range of possible values from 0 to 100. The results indicate a similar pattern of the user behavior, meaning that proposed apps could help user to measure the diopter level with 100% success rate, considering the total time for performing each scenario condition, participants completed the experiment task considerably fast with proposed application (Mean=2.03 minutes, Min=1.6 minutes, and Max=3.1 minutes) when compared to the average time taken when conduct clinical refraction measurement [34]. The total SUS score is more than 80, meaning that the overall performance of this prototype is excellent to user [35].…”
