The influence of a humectant‐rich mixture on normalz skin barrier function and on once‐ and twice‐daily treatment of foot xerosis. A prospective, randomized, evaluator–blind, bilateral and untreated‐control study

Abstract: The humectant-rich formulation efficiently relieved the xerosis on the feet without inducing any weakening of the skin barrier function. Instead the normal skin became more resistant to external insults by the treatment.

“…As shown in this study, the determination of pedal TEWL (below the ankle) is not an appropriate parameter for describing the skin barrier. Similar results were also found by Lodén et al [15] in a study of dry pedal skin. While the tested treatment preparation changed the skin thickness, moisture content and erythema of the feet, no differences were found in this study in terms of the TEWL.…”

“…The proliferation of dry skin increases with advancing age, which is due to changes in the physiological and immunological properties of the skin [14]. Although many people suffering from dry skin of the feet do not have a chronic illness such as diabetes, there are only a few studies regarding pedicure preparations for the foot [15]. …”

“…Three different patterns regarding TEWL are noted in skin barrier diseases (Fig. ): (i) the elevated TEWL level remains unchanged; (ii) TEWL increases further (i.e. weakening of the barrier); or (iii) TEWL decreases towards normal values (i.e.…”
