The Importance of Pilot Studies for Gamified Research

Abstract: Games and game-like methodologies are increasingly used as research environments, especially to conduct experiments to study decision-making. This growing trend in conducting gamifed experiments is suggestive of the need for pilot studies and pre-testing the underlying games as well as experimental design. In this paper, we present an example of conducting a pilot study using Gamettes, a game-based methodology for collecting rich behavioral data on human decisions. Our results shed light on the efcacy of our e… Show more

“…According to this policy, each agent orders or produces enough product to bring their inventory position to a predefined level based on a periodic review policy with zero fixed costs [205]. In a prior pilot study [223], we found initial evidence for the effect of disruption on human behavior 1 . Hence, we are interested in studying human 1 I will discuss this pilot study in more details in Chapter 7.…”

“…Conducting pilot studies with Gamettes was a vital step in fine-tuning the experiment and Gamette design for behavioral research. Before carrying out the experiment in Chapter 4, I conducted a pilot study using participants recruited from Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) [223].…”
