The importance of information technology in port terminal operations

Abstract: Information technology has become an essential part of the rapid and accurate transfer and processing of enormous volumes of data processed in international transport firms and port organisations. The proper management of systems, which process this information and communicate it to those who manage port operations, is vital for efficient transport. This explains why container-tracking systems are given high priority among operational computer applications in ports. Investigates the importance of information t… Show more

“…Stahlbock et al [11] further discuss some of the special characteristics in regards to planning and scheduling operations in terminals, such as the uncertainty of incoming containers. This lack of information is also mentioned by Kia et al [12] and Zhou et al [13]. Zhou et al [13] describes how lack of information in a dynamic supply chain reduces efficiency in each level.…”

“…Data exchange is instrumental not only for allowing coordination among hinterland transport actors, but also to ensure visibility in the chain for efficiency, security and planning purposes. As highlighted by Kia et al (2000), among others, the role of ICT in terminal management is critical to ensure efficient operations. Gate systems typically operate as part of a multipoint system, where information on the container manifest, the cargo or the truck driver can be collected and linked to the terminal EDI system (Guan and Liu 2009, Huynh 2009, Zhao and Goodchild 2010.…”

“…• Productivity index of the ship at the terminal = TT i NST i (9) where TTi is the terminal i tonnage, NSTi the number of ships terminal i Average amount of cargo transferred per hour by the ship that it is moored at the terminal. There are indices that measure the occupation time of the arrival of a ship at a terminal (hour/ship) (Fig.…”

“…Consequently, actors in most middle and small size ports don't have a clear idea about the required improvements that must take place to make them agree with the international standards of efficiency and effectiveness. Therefore, a quantitative evaluation of the socioeconomic impact of port activities in the city where it is located, is rarely found [9,13,16]. It then becomes necessary for these port communities to count on tools to help them improve their competitiveness, not only at the national but also at the international level.…”
