The transformation of tertiary education faces challenges that go hand in hand with growing requirements on the competences of university teachers. Quality assessment of teachers when it comes to their competences and competence approaches in general is of key importance in this process. However, teachers’ competence profiles are not unified even now, not to mention the absence of competence assessment criteria. The aim of the study is to offer a literature review on university teachers’ competences, with consideration of research methods and tools used. Altogether, through the Scopus and Web of Science electronic databases we summarised 35 studies, 15 theoretical and 20 empirical. Our analysis shows that over the past 10 years studies have primarily focused on digital competences, with the majority of research projects being of quantitative nature using original questionnaires due to the absence of standardised measurement tools in the field. Professional development of academics in higher education in South Africa has been offered in an uncoordinated and unsustainable manner. Ever since the new dispensation, concerted efforts have been implemented to address this problem. As part of the solution, universities through their academic development units, have introduced various pedagogical training workshops to equip academics with teaching skills. This study investigates perceptions of academics pertaining to this training. A multi-method cross-sectional research design was adopted to understand lecturers' perspectives regarding professional development. A total of 45 participants were purposefully selected to participate in the study from the academics who attended the pedagogical training. A questionnaire (closed and open-ended) was used to collect data. Quantitative data were analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), while thematic analysis was applied to analyse qualitative data. Results of the study revealed that the training was well-received and academic staff members felt motivated and confident to implement various instructional strategies acquired from the training. Participants expressed a need and willingness to learn and develop new instructional techniques and acquired a positive outlook on teaching and learning following the professional development training. The study recommends redesigning the pedagogical training to include ongoing support activities and customisation in addition to the generic version.

We are witnessing a growing interest in characterising the teaching competences that should configure the profile of current teachers in all educational stages, including university. Despite the complexity in its conceptualization and heterogeneity of proposals, it is necessary to address this issue due to its importance in teacher training and professional development. To this end, this research aims to analyse, with a documentary and content analysis, the frameworks of teaching competences of university professors in the Spanish context since the beginning of the century, through a review of reviews. On the one hand, we analyse the teaching competences proposed by reference frameworks to establish a synthesis of the main competences to be developed. And on the other hand, we identify the competences established in the teaching competence frameworks, based on the proposed reference competence framework. Although the difficulty in unifying the basic skills of university teaching staff, many similarities have been obtained in the frameworks, being the learning management and psychopedagogical competences the most common among them. Identifying trends in competency frameworks can help university institutions to better understand and use them.
