The COVID-19 epidemic has become a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Thus, this sudden health incident has brought great risk and pressure to the city with dense population flow. A deep understanding of the migration characteristics and laws of the urban population in China will play a very positive role in the prevention and control of the epidemic situation. Based on Baidu location-based service (LBS) big data, using complex networks method and geographic visualization tools, this paper explores the spatial structure evolution of population flow network (PFN) in 368 cities of China under different traffic control situations. Effective distance models and linear regression models were established to analyze how the population flow across cities affects the spread of the epidemic. Our findings show that: (1) the scope of population flow is closely related to the administrative level of the city and the traffic control policies in various cities which adjust with the epidemic situation; The PFN mainly presents the hierarchical structure dominated by the urban hierarchy and the regional isolation structure adjacent to the geographical location.(2) through the analysis network topology structure of PFN, it is found that only the first stage has a large clustering coefficient and a relatively short average path length, which conforms to the characteristics of small world network. The epidemic situation has a great impact on the network topology in other stages, and the network structure tends to be centralized. (3) The overall migration scale of the whole country decreased by 36.85% compared with the same period of last year’s lunar calendar, and a further reduction of 78.52% in the nationwide traffic control stage after the festival. (4) Finally, based on the comparison of the effective distance and the spatial distance from the Wuhan to other destination cities, it is demonstrated that there is a higher correlation between the effective distance and the epidemic spread both in Hubei province and the whole country.

This paper examines China's LCC market and assesses the network development patterns from a geographical perspective. Overall, a nationwide LCC network has been formed with each individual LCC focusing on their own markets with limited overlap to avoid cut-throat competition. Spring Airlines has developed an advanced network supported by its core bases including Shanghai in East China, Shijiazhuang in North China, Shenyang in Northeast China and Shenzhen in South China. China United has developed a network radiating from Beijing. West Air and Lucky Air seem to be developing a hub-and-spoke network that contributes to the tourism industry in West China. The LCC network is affected by seasonal variations, especially for the routes to tourism destinations such as Haikou, Sanya and Xiamen. Hub cities, however, experience less seasonal impact. This research also finds that routes between 600-1800 km account for a large proportion of the LCC markets. Aviation policy, local government's subsidization and the expansion of the high-speed rail network have helped shape the landscape of China's LCC sector.

With the technological advancement, China’s high-speed rail (HSR) has achieved a higher running speed than ever before, which at the same time leads to the intensive competition between air and high-speed rail with trips within 500–1000 km, as well as to the significant changes of travelers’ air-to-HSR choice. In order to explore the dynamic adaptation of travelers’ choice of high-speed rail (HSR) and air in the case of HSR speed-up, a logit dynamics model of travelers’ choice based on evolutionary game was constructed to describe the evolution of travelers’ choice. With HSR-air travel time and the ticket price of origin-destination (OD) points of Beijing-Shanghai as the benchmark, the study set up two scenarios of HSR speed-up and compared and analyzed their payoffs in value. On the basis of mathematical simulation, the travelers’ “air-to-HSR choice” and the change of competition range under the background of HSR speed-up were both discussed. The result indicated that the HSR speed-up would attract more travelers, and its share rate would rise to 58.31% and 72.73%, respectively, with HSR running speed increasing to 400 and 600 km/h; the marginal utility of HSR speed-up is more obvious, and in the meantime, the increase of HSR running speed extends the intense HSR-air competition range to longer-distance travels. In the case of HSR speed-up, travelers’ choice changes as well. The HSR operators themselves should formulate reasonable ticket prices and improve their management. At the same time, the air operators should adjust their operation plan in time.
