Summary The Internet of Things (IoT) is the future technology, whose glimpses are already visible in various fields today. IoT promises a connection of about 50 billion devices in the near future to enhance data sharing and analysis between many otherwise independent modules. Smart sensors, smart antennas, and intelligent processors form the backbone of IoT technology. IoT is about remote detection and control of devices which is dependent on the efficient communication system provided. This paper studies the IoT technology, along with its supportive systems, giving an emphasis to the communication module, enabled using microstrip patch antennas. The study takes a walk through the different improvement techniques implemented in patch antennas as DGS, MIMO, and arrays and further pins down the research gaps and objectives that can be taken up in this field with respect to the effective implementation of IoT services. Recent advances in the antenna systems employed in IoT environment are discussed, and the antennas employed in IoT devices and applications are reviewed in detail. Recently evolving technologies like LoRa and NB‐IoT and the ESP8266 module which is widely used in IoT applications are addressed. A good insight is given into the challenges faced in this field along with some recent case studies.

The realm of refrigeration industry has marked its significance for storing food and beverages. Refrigeration warehouses are extensively used to store various combinations of large fresh food stock at favourable temperatures to maintain its quality. Any deviations from these favourable temperatures pose negative impacts on the cold stock. Hence, it is essential to minimize the margin of these potential risks that can incur huge loss to the cold-storage industries. On-site evaluation can be reliable to address these risks, but it is time consuming and an inefficient process as human intervention can be prone to manual errors. The paper, therefore, proposes a methodology to build a smart IoT system to remotely monitor and evaluate the refrigeration warehouses seamlessly at one’s fingertips using a mobile or laptop through dashboards. Furthermore, this paper addresses the difficulties in managing and analysing the large sensory data which are the result of seamless monitoring by unleashing the power of edge computing and cloud computing.

In this modern era, the Internet of Things plays an important role to make human life much easier and more convenient. Smart appliances have overtaken conventional appliances by improving efficiency, robustness, power consumption, connectivity. ‘Smart’ is associated with appliances which are interfaced with the Web. Thus, smart appliances are set forth to extend into every household these days. Smart appliances include Television, Dishwasher, Washing machine, Water purifier, Refrigerator. In this paper, we propose a methodology to make traditional Refrigerator smart. Smart Refrigerators help in food management by adding computational intelligence that involves the use of a microcontroller and various kinds of sensors to improve the functionality of the fridge. Using automation techniques, a cost-effective intelligence is added to the refrigerator. This smart fridge is user-friendly and enhances human life. The features that can be provided are numerous and mobile or web application is designed to prior control the fridge and application act as a connection between fridge and user. The smart refrigerator senses the shortage of items in it and upon granting access orders the item online or messages the grocery store to deliver the items. The smart module monitors temperature, humidity and uploads to cloud platform with real-time updates to the user.
