This work aims to investigate an Indonesian EFL student’s perceptions and experiences in repeatedly doing standardized English language proficiency test: TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) and TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). This standardized test has a significant role in the academic and professional lives of students (Anam, 2019); it contributes positively to students’ language proficiency and their future employment if they have higer and valid score in the test (Hsieh, 2017). This present study interviewed an Indonesian EFL student at a National University in Taiwan running an international program. The study participant passed the exam, but she did it repeatedly before she could pass it. This study used a qualitative phenomenological approach with an in-depth interview. The relevant findings illustrate that the participant reveals the reasons for failing the test: lack of self-awareness, lack of self-confidence, and the distance of the test venue from her dormitory. On the contrary, she passed the test by doing online simulation exam individually and modifying her study skills while preparing for the test. The failure process had a positive impact on her in making her to know her ability.

Vocabulary has a big role in learning English, because the understanding of English vocabulary affects to the other skills. unfortunately, the lack of English vocabulary is often founded in Indonesian students, and it is a serious problem. The researcher found the problems in an Islamic Senior High School in Majalengka west Java. The first problem is most of students were lack of vocabulary, and the second problem is the limited of technology in learning English language. Research methodology in this research was qualitative method with Classroom Action Research as data collection. The instruments of the research were test, observation sheet, and questionnaire. The research questions were; How does the teacher implement MEMRISE in teaching vocabulary? What is the students’ perception of their experiences before using MEMRISE and after using MEMRISE, and what is the result of teaching English vocabulary after using MEMRISE? The aims of The Study were to Investigate the teacher in the implementation of MEMRISE in teaching English vocabulary, to investigate the students' improvement of English vocabulary after using MEMRISE in cycle I, to investigate the students' improvement of English vocabulary after using MEMRISE in cycle II, to investigate the students’ perception of their experiences before and after using MEMRISE. This research used qualitative method through Classroom Action Research as data collection. In this research the researcher used purposive sampling, and the sample is a class of x IPS 2 that consists of 18 students. In this research the researcher as a teacher. The result show in the pre-test the mean score is 54,06, in the post-test 1 the mean score is 72,06, in the post-test 2 the mean score of pre-test is 52,048, the mean score of post-test 1 was 69,43, and the mean score of post-test 2 was 80,86. The conclusion was there was improvement of students’ vocabulary score through MEMRISE application.

Nowadays the TOEFL test is very important. The TOEFL test is not only to measure English proficiency, but also for the sake of scholarship requirements, and as a requirement to graduate from college. This study explores the difficulties of EFL students in learning the TOEFL ITP of Structure and Written Expression (SWE) and how EFL students overcome difficulties in learning the TOEFL ITP of SWE. This study uses a narrative inquiry design. The data used in this study is qualitative data obtained from information provided by students through questionnaires and interviews. The results of the study show that there are several difficulties for students in learning TOEFL ITP, namely sentences with multiple clauses, sentences with inverted subjects and verbs, problems with prepositions, problems with the form of the verb, sentences with one clause, problems with subject/verb agreement. The way students overcome difficulties in the TOEFL ITP of SWE is to re-learn what has been taught by the tutor, reopen the module, learn from several other references besides the reference given by the tutor, learn from youtube, re-learn with classmates who have mastered the material. , do the practice questions independently. The findings in this research are expected to give an empirical contribution to TOEFL teachers to pay attention to students' difficulties in learning TOEFL ITP, especially SWE.
