The impact of vegetation on the bank erosion (Case study: The Haraz River)

Abstract: Vegetation establishment is a suitable biological method of erosion control. Bank erosion is one form of water erosion and its adverse effects include an increase in turbidity, degradation of riverbank lands, difficulties caused by sediments depositing in the downstream. The rate of riverbank erosion can be decreased by application of biological methods in sensitive reaches identified. In this study, a 3250 m section of the Haraz River was studied to evaluate the effects of vegetation establishment on shear st… Show more

“…This may be related to the revegetation of different parts of forest road at the time of construction (Baharuddin et al 1995;Cerda 2007). Vegetation cover is an important factor, playing a key role in sediment absorption, decrease of runoff velocity and volume, and protection of soil against erosion and sedimentation (Casermeiro et al 2004;Foltz et al 2009;Gholami, Khaleghi 2013). Our results showed the negative relationship between sediment and vegetation cover.…”

“…Due to spatial differences on a large scale, it is difficult to obtain better correlations between desertification and these factors using a linear regression model [38,39]. Recently, geographically weighted regression (GWR), which can be used to model spatial variations in the relationships between dependent and independent variables, has attracted increasing research attention [40,41]. Thus, GWR was introduced to analyze the correlation between desertification and the aforementioned factors in this study [42,43].…”

“…Recently more influential factors are included in numerical models for better predictions. Xiao et al [44] and Gholami and Khaleghi [11] studied bank erosion affected by instream vegetation. Rinaldi et al [30] included groundwater effect.…”
