The impact of thyroid tumor features on lymph node metastasis in papillary thyroid carcinoma patients in head and neck department at KAMC: A retrospective cross-sectional study

Abstract: Introduction Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most prevalent type of thyroid cancer. It is one of the most common types of malignancy of the thyroid that spreads to cervical lymph nodes. Lymph node metastasis (LNM) is an important factor when determining recurrence risk, and determining the extent of lymph node involvement can guide treatment. Our main objective is to evaluate the association between the size of the tumor and the number of lymph node metastases in patients with PTC. Methods:… Show more

“…Papillary carcinoma is the most common type of well-differentiated thyroid malignancy, and the representative oncogenic basis of this tumor is radiation exposure in vivo [ 50 ]. Although 89.5% of thyroid papillary carcinomas show positive expression of S100A2 in vivo [ 51 ], the detailed prognostic impact of S100A2 in thyroid papillary carcinoma remains unclear.…”

“…Lymph node metastases (LNM), an intermediate metastatic step from the primary site to the lymph nodes, represent an aggressive yet curable state for many solid tumors [ 1 , 2 ]. Although LNM was the direct reason for distant metastases, it reflects the biological selection of more aggressive subpopulations showing close relation with local and/or regional recurrence [ 3 , 4 ]. As demonstrated by many researchers, the presence of LNMs is associated with decreased postoperative survival in gastric cancer [ 5 , 6 ], being the most important prognostic factors [ 7 ].…”

“…Although it has not shown much evidence of improvement in survival [ 12 ], it can be useful in patients with neck node involvement [ 1 ]. According to a study done in Saudi Arabia, the most common neck node involved is level IV followed by level III nodes [ 13 ]. In the above case, level V lymph nodes were enlarged which makes it rare.…”
