Introduction: Magnifying dental loupes have been reported to improve performance and ergonomics among different dental care practitioners. However, there is little evidence to support its use among novice dental students. In this study, we correlated the use of magnifying dental loupes and first-year dental student’s performance in preclinical competency assessments. In addition, we evaluated the students’ perceived experience with the use of magnifying dental loupes. Materials and methods: The students’ performance and the students’ perceived experience with the use of magnifying dental loupes were assessed. To assess the students’ performance, we compared the competency assessment scores of the students either using dental magnifying dental loupes or not. A linear mixed-effects model was used to test the effect of magnifying dental loupes on students’ performance in cavity preparation classes I, II, and III. To assess the perceived experience with the use of magnifying dental loupes, 109 first-year dental students were surveyed. Results: Magnifying dental loupes showed a positive and significant correlation with student’s increase in performance. Students who used magnifying dental loupes have shown a positive difference of 2.8 points (p= 0.029). However, as multiple competency assessments were evaluated, the overall students’ scores varied despite the fact of using or not magnifying dental loupes. In addition, first-year dental students positively perceived the use of magnifying dental loupes. Conclusion: Magnifying dental loupes increased first-year performance in classes I, II and III preparation competency assessments.

Background: Magnifying loupes in dentistry have three key objectives: To improve visibility, compensate for the lack of near vision presbyopia and maintain proper posture. The study aims to determine the prevalence and consciousness of using magnification devices during restorative procedures among dental practitioners in Saudi Arabia. Methods: The study group included all dental practitioners aged above 18 years. The outcomes of this study were analyzed using the SPSS program using a pre-tested questionnaire. Results: The study included 634 participants as follows; 56.9% females; 43.1% males; 46% dental interns; 35.8% General Dentists; 47.9% from the western region; 33.9% from the Central region. 55.7% of participants were using magnification devices and 44.3% were not using magnification devices. 32 percent of respondents thought that the expensive price of the magnification equipment was a barrier to its use. In comparison, 27.1% found no reason to hold back from buying the magnifying loupes. The rest of the participants found excuses for not buying; 17.1% chose discomfort; 16.1% chose lack of training; 7.7 of Dental practitioners decided to wear glasses. Conclusion:The findings revealed that, while most practitioners were aware of dental magnification, their use in clinical practice could have been better. Dental practitioners have moderate knowledge of the usage of dental magnification during restorative procedures.

Background: Dental loupes are used by dental professionals to improve visual performance, reduce eye strain and prevent musculoskeletal disorders. Data on their usage in pediatric dentistry are scarce. Study design: We performed a cross-sectional survey to evaluate the approach, knowledge, and frequency of using loupes among 100 general and pediatric dentists. Results: showed that the use of loupes is significantly more prevalent among general dentists (64.3%) compared to pediatric specialists and residents (35.7%). Among dentists who reported that they do not use loupes, 63.6% were pediatric dentists and residents, and 82.5% were dentists working with children. A significantly higher percentage of dentists who self-reported as loupes users perceived that the loupes afford comfortable and stable posture, confidence while working, and contribute to the detection of tooth decay. A significantly higher percentage of dentists who self-reported as non-users of loupes (compared to loupes users), claimed that they weaken the eyes, require long adjustment, and cause discomfort. Conclusion: Although the use of loupes in general dentistry is becoming more prevalent, there is still a need to raise awareness for this vision aid among pediatric dentists while promoting its advantages, to reap benefits associated with their usage.
