The Impact of the Hepatitis B Core Antibody Status on Recurrence in Patients with Non-B Non-C Hepatocellular Carcinoma after Curative Surgery

Abstract: Background: The serum antibody to hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAb) is considered a risk factor of liver carcinogenesis. This study aimed to reveal whether HBcAb status is a prognostic factor after hepatectomy is performed for treating hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods: This retrospective study enrolled 272 patients who underwent hepatectomy as the initial treatment for HCC and who were followed up over 5 years after surgery. The types of HCC were classified into the following 3 types according to the hep… Show more

“…A “NAFLD” diagnosis requires exclusion of significant alcohol use (>21 drinks, on average, per week for men or >14 drinks, on average, per week for women) . Given that almost 40% of U.S. adults are now obese, mixed forms of NAFLD and alcoholic FLD are increasingly likely . In addition, alcohol intake may interact with genetic variants that predispose to liver injury.…”

(47,48) In addition, alcohol intake may interact with genetic variants that predispose to liver injury. For instance, PNPLA3 148M homozygosity conferred significant additional mortality risk in patients with severe alcoholic hepatitis.…”

“…The patients with HBV were defined as HBV related HCC (B-HCC). While in the other group includes the patients without HBsAg or HCVAb, so-called non-HBV non-HCV related HCC (NBNC-HCC) [51]. The healthy controls were excluded diabetes, metabolic syndrome, hypertension, inflammatory bowel diseases, liver disease and cancers.…”

“…Although the above staging systems are all commonly used in HCC, they are controversial to some extent (27,(35)(36)(37). The TNM system, for instance, has limited applicability in clinical practice, because it does not take into account tumor differentiation (38,39). Furthermore, previous studies that used the BCLC staging system and CLIP score uncovered limitations in differentiating and predicting the prognosis of patients with advanced-stage HCC (40)(41)(42).…”
