This study investigates the effect of global competitiveness determinants on the growth of the bioenergy industry in the European Union (EU-28) region from 1990-2018. Applying the panel fixed effect model, the results revealed that the bioenergy industry grows with an increase in the global competitiveness index. While human capital, innovation ecosystem, markets, enabling environment, and gross domestic product found to be increasing the growth. The finding implies that the growth of the bioenergy industry in EU-28 developed countries can be effectively strengthened by improving the quality of human capital and enabling environment. Also, the result implies that the growth of the bioenergy industry in EU-28 developing countries can effectively improve by increasing the quality innovations system and markets. These will eventually contribute to tackling global warming and environmental pollution. The estimated results are considered robust as validated by panel random effect and pooled Ordinary Least Squares estimators. The study recommends for EU-28 countries to increase the efficiency of global competitiveness indicators to achieve social and environmental objectives. Policymakers should also invest more in global competitiveness factors to increase the supply and accessibility of bioenergy output. The authorities of these countries can equally emphasize on efficiency and sustainability of global competitiveness decomposition to achieve energy security and reduce dependency on fossil fuel.

In recent years, China has gradually become one of the countries with the largest levels of foreign direct investment (FDI). FDI has played a significant role in promoting Chinese economic development, and the FDI technology spillover effect is one of the core forces driving China towards reaching new growth milestones. Therefore, due to the country’s interest in development, there is competition for FDI throughout China. However, the existing imperfect environmental protection system cannot prevent FDI from flowing into China’s highly polluting and resource-intensive industrial chain, possibly causing serious environmental problems. Therefore, the topic of properly introducing foreign capital to promote development and effectively end China’s current environmental pollution crisis has become a research focus. To explore FDI’s impact on China’s economic growth, technological innovation, and environmental pollution, we use Chinese provincial panel data for 2004–2016 to construct a dynamic panel simultaneous-equation model. Considering the interrelationships between the equations, we construct economic models of economic growth, technological innovation, and pollution emissions, and incorporate them into the same research system for generalized method of moments (GMM) estimation. Our results show that FDI has a significant and positive direct impact on China’s economic growth and technological innovation, and can furthermore have a significant pull effect on the domestic economy through the backward spillover channel. At the same time, FDI has a direct and significant impact on the increase in regional waste-water discharge, while exhibiting a pollution halo effect on the emission of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) emissions directly. In addition, we observe “benign feedback mechanism” between technological innovation output and these three types of pollution, namely SO2 emission, COD emissions, and ammonia and nitrogen discharge.

This study aims at exploring the impact of globalization, technology and employment on economic growth of developing economies. This study also observed the long-run, short-run and causality relationships between globalization, technological innovations, employment, and economic growth for 20 selected developing countries covering the data for period of 1991 to 2017. Since stationary of variables is examined through ADF tests, Levin-Lin-Chu test, and IM-Pesaran-Shin test and resulted with mixed order of integration, Panel ARDL estimation techniques are employed to measure the long run effects of these variables on growth of selected economies. Dumitrescu-Hurlin panel Granger Causality test was applied for causality analysis. All variables have strong positive and significant relationship with growth. This study concluded that knowledge and research-based education have a key role in promoting long-run growth as evident from the ‘New growth theory’ of Romer. On the basis of these results, it is suggested that knowledge and research-based education should be promoted and export-oriented policies should also be encouraged to attain benefits of trade openness and globalization for accelerating economic growth on sustainable basis.
