The impact of surgeon handedness in total hip replacement

Abstract: INTRODUCTION Total hip replacement (THR) is successful and performed commonly. Component placement is a determinant of outcome. Influence of surgeon handedness on component placement has not been considered previously. This study was a radiographic assessment of component positioning with respect to handedness. Early data from 160 patients are reported. METHODS Overall, 160 primary THRs for osteoarthritis were included. Equal numbers of left and right THRs were performed by four surgeons, two right-handed and … Show more

“…The difference in surgical technique and outcomes between RHD and LHD surgeons has been examined before in pediatric surgery, orthopedics, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, and otolaryngology . A study compared the characteristics and precision of right and left hand needle driving in the setting of right‐handed pediatric surgeons performing laparoscopic diaphragmatic hernia repair .…”

“…Additionally, RHD orthopedic surgeons had a higher incidence of technical failure when correcting left femur fractures with left hip screw insertion . Other orthopedic studies also showed differences in surgical outcomes based on handedness as well . Pedicle screw orientation was found to be significantly difference in RHD and LHD surgeons in one neurosurgery study, which has implications for disorientation of the pedicle .…”
