The impact of SARS-CoV2 vaccines on the incidence of graft versus host disease in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients: a single-center retrospective study

Abstract: This study reports the incidence of chronic graft versus host disease (GvHD) in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (alloHCT) recipients who received SARS-CoV2 vaccination. The overall rates of new and worsening chronic GvHD combined were 14%, with median time from vaccination to GVHD being approximately three to four weeks. A majority of the cases were of mild to moderate severity and primarily localized to either the skin, mouth, or joints. Prior chronic GVHD and recent transplant were associated w… Show more

“…Both uveitis and GVHD have been reported respectively after vaccination against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) [ 5 , 6 ]. Nevertheless, the simultaneous occurrence of ocular GVHD and anterior uveitis in recipients of HSCT after COVID-19 vaccination is rare and has not been extensively discussed in previous literature.…”

“…Among these cases, the ocular presentation accounted for approximately 20%. Previous chronic GVHD and transplant dates less than 180 days were associated to a higher rate of GVHD [ 5 ]. Andrew et al reported that in allogeneic HSCT recipients with chronic GVHD, the occurrence of symptom exacerbation following COVID-19 vaccination was relatively common (26.5%) [ 11 ].…”
