The Impact of Pro-environmental Preference on Consumers’ Perceived Well-being: The Mediating Role of Self-Determination Need Satisfaction

Abstract: This study uses a conceptual research model to explore the mediating role of need satisfaction for competence, relatedness, and autonomy in the relationship between pro-environmental preference (PEP) and consumers’ perceived well-being (PWB). The data were collected on WJX (a Chinese online recruitment platform) from a sample of 514 respondents and analyzed using Smart PLS 3. The results indicated that two need satisfactions (competence and autonomy) fully mediate the relationship between PEP and consumers’ PW… Show more

“…By actively participating in eco-green practices, these individuals, on the one hand, contribute to safeguarding the natural environment and its sustainability; on the other hand, they experience a sense of fulfilment and connection with the natural environment, which in turn, enhances their PWB. This notion aligns with a considerable set of research indicating that the preference for eco-green behaviors positively predicted PWB, meaning that individuals who engage eco-green practices and adopt a green lifestyle tend to experience better sense of PWB (Carrero et al 2020;Gao et al 2020). Given this mechanism, the first hypothesis (H1) was advanced as follows:…”

“…If education should act as an active instrument of social change and progress [3] the most important question of our times for educators today has to be: How can we guide individuals to act more sustainably [4]. The literature shows ample evidence that educational efforts concerning the preservation of the environment are failing to transform existing knowledge, attitudes and values into action [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12]. Not the lack of knowledge or resources but this gap between inner processes like judgments, attitudes, intentions, knowledge and values and action in the outer world has to be seen as the foremost problem in education for sustainable development (=inner-outer gap).…”

“…As this study is not meant to be a behavioral intervention, which would require a long-term evaluation of its efficacy and durability, we used pro-environmental preferences (PEPs) [19] as a proxy of pro-environmental behavior (PEB). PEPs investigate the likelihood that a certain product is preferred over another, rather than the actual consumption behavior.…”
