To control the spread of the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19), China imposed nationwide restrictions on the movement of its population (lockdown) after the Chinese New Year of 2020, leading to large reductions in economic activities and associated emissions. Despite such large decreases in primary pollution, there were nonetheless several periods of heavy haze pollution in East China, raising questions about the well-established relationship between human activities and air quality. Here, using comprehensive measurements and modeling, we show the haze during the COVID lockdown were driven by enhancements of secondary pollution. In particular, large decreases in NOx emissions from transportation increased ozone and nighttime NO3 radical formation, and these increases in atmospheric oxidizing capacity in turn facilitated the formation of secondary particulate matter. Our results, afforded by the tragic natural experiment of the COVID-19 pandemic, indicate that haze mitigation depends upon a coordinated and balanced strategy for controlling multiple pollutants.
How to overcome informational conformity consumer behavior when faced with threats of death is a social problem in response to COVID-19. This research is based on the terror management theory, the need to belong theory and the materialism theory. It uses a theoretical model to determine the relationships between threats of death and informational conformity consumer behavior. From 1453 samples collected during outbreak of COVID-19 in China, we used a structural equation model to test multiple research hypotheses. The result shows that threats of death are positively associated with a need to belong, materialism and informational conformity consumer behavior. The need to belong and materialism can play a mediating role between threats of death and information conformity consumption behavior, and perceived social support can play a moderating role between threats of death and information conformity consumption behavior.
Environmental anxiety (EA) caused by environmental pollution has prompted consumers to change their behaviour towards greener, lower‐carbon and environmentally friendly. However, its boundary conditions and internal mechanisms are still unclear. With two experiments based on attentional control theory and self‐discrepancy theory, this study aimed to explore the influence mechanism of EA on PEB. In Experiment 1, it was found that environmental anxiety can directly and significantly affect Pro‐environmental behaviour intention (PEBI). In Experiment 2, it was found that at high levels of self‐discrepancy, EA can directly and significantly affect compensatory PEBI, and guilt can play a significant mediating role in the effect of EA on compensatory PEBI. However, EA does not significantly affect promotional PEBI. At low levels of self‐discrepancy, EA can directly and significantly affect promotional PEBI but cannot affect compensatory PEBI. Therefore, we concluded that the same PEB could have different psychological mechanisms in different contexts.
Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to assess the vision-related quality of life (VR-QoL) in glaucoma patients and its correlations with psychological disturbances and visual function components.
Materials and Methods:
The 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire (NEI VFQ-25) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) questionnaires were administered to 428 Chinese glaucoma patients to evaluate their VR-QoL and anxiety and depression disorders, respectively. Sociodemographical and clinical factors were collected at the same time. Univariate analyses were used to investigate the associations between the variables and the VR-QoL. Multivariate linear regression analyses were used to identify the independent psychological and visual functional predictors of the VR-QoL. Standardized partial regression analyses were used to reveal the variables that mostly relevant to the VR-QoL.
Results:
The composite score (mean±SD) was 71.88±14.44 for NEI VFQ-25 and 13.17±6.56 for HADS. Visual function indices, including best-corrected visual acuity and mean deviation of both eyes in addition to psychological symptoms including anxiety and depression were both correlated with VR-QoL significantly, even after adjusting for sociodemographical and clinical factors. Standardized partial regression analyses further suggested that psychological disorders, especially anxiety rather than visual function components, were mostly relevant to VR-QoL.
Conclusions:
Deterioration of vision impairment and visual field defects in addition to increased recognition of psychological disturbances reduce the VR-QoL of glaucoma patients significantly. Alleviating psychological symptoms, especially anxiety, perhaps have a greater influence on the improvement of VR-QoL.
